No, the key hint was always on the ceiling.
The only one to pay attention to what happens in Goblins.

Evolutionary biologists know sufficient examples to indicate that this might not be bad (but they know of more examples where it did go bad).
No. The Y Chromosal Adam was NOT the only male alive in his time, just that all males today have a direct patrilinear descent from him. The other males had only daughters, or sons that had only daughters, or sons that had sons that had only daughters, or so forth until present day. The same for Mitochondrial Eve; other women existed, but all of their lines were broken as they only had sons, or daughters that only had sons, or so forth.

With the terrible lack of genetic diversity in humanity as it is (seriously, we're really really inbred), a bottleneck of just 1 male or 1 female would probably doom the human race to extinction.

Where can I go to read more about this. I've never heard any of this and would like to read about it full rather than expect a full explanation in a comic forum.

Edit: Actually, you've used enough terms to find it through google search. This article frames quite well the two conclusions shared here.

there is a way to open the door from the inside, as seen on panel 2 of http://www.goblinscomic.org/04122013/. picking up the right key is just more convenient than fighting all of the aalts then figuring out how to open the door
