Re: The Sundered Way
Coljin, no longer worrying about being quiet, he knows the battle will echo all over in here once this starts, casts toll the dead. He will attack before his unit, then they attack.
Toll the dead: 2D12 = [8, 11] = 19
Dragonborn attack: 1D20+6 = [7]+6 = 13

Re: The Sundered Way
Randy skips forward to make his attack.
Rapier attack 1: 1D20+7 = [4]+7 = 11
Rapier attack 2: 1D20+7 = [19]+7 = 26
rapier damage: 1D8+4 = [6]+4 = 10
Rapier attack 3: 1D20+7 = [5]+7 = 12
Total: 10 damage.
His rapier skitters off of the carapace a couple of times before sinking in between plates. He then quickly moves back to his position North of the bridge and prepares to dodge.

Dornikal moves up and slashes at the cow eater.
Attacking a cow eater: 1D20+8 = [6]+8 = 14
1D8+5 = [6]+5 = 11
And again,
2nd attacking a cow eater: 1D20+8 = [17]+8 = 25
1D8+5 = [3]+5 = 8
((Sorry about the delay.))

Re: The Sundered Way
Dornikal hacks into the lead bug, followed by Randy darting in to jab it before falling back. The bug snaps at him as he retreats, but isn't able to catch hold of him with its mandibles.
OppAtt on Randy: 1D20+5 = [4]+5 = 9 MISS
A booming bell sounds and the bug crumples as Coljin ends it.
WIS Save: 1D20+1 = [8]+1 = 9
Coljin's squad moves forward, but their jabbing spears aren't able to connect.

Re: The Sundered Way
Zokk moves around Coljin's squad and slams the bug before falling back. As they do so, the bug lashes out, mandibles clamping around their trunk as flaming saliva drips down their bark. The mandibles are locked in, and Zokk is grappled in place!
OppAtt on Zokk: 1D20+5 = [20]+5 = 25
3D6+3 = [1, 3, 6]+3 = 13
Crit on Zokk: 3D6 = [2, 1, 2] = 5

8 fire > 16 Fire
26 total damage coming Zokk's way.

Re: The Sundered Way
Zokk has mobility, which if they attack a creature that creature can't do an Attack of op.
When you make a melee attack against a creature, you don't provoke opportunity attacks from that creature for the rest of the turn, whether you hit or not.

Ulmwin's squad simply readies their action, not willing to fling spears into such heavy friendly combat zone, while Ulmwin himself tries to hit with a vicious mockery

Dornikal hacks into one, and Ulmwin breaks its little buggy brain with his mean words.

Randy looks down the tunnel where the bugs retreated.
"Huh. For a big bug, these things seem pretty adaptable in their tactics. They tried to swarm us out front, and since that didn't work, they've backed off. Maybe getting directions from something smarter than the frontline troops?"

"Definitely more cunning than a bug full on rush. We push on? Everyone alright?"

((Nice! There was definitely a chance they over ran you guys in this room, I'm sure you would have figured out a way across, but them burning the bridge would have made establishing on the far side much harder! Heading to work soon, will update tonight or tomorrow with the next map!))

You descend down to a lower level of the mine, the sounds of skittering fading away ahead of you, before finding yourselves entering a open chamber.
No bugs in sight.

Re: The Sundered Way
Randy peers down the well, but it's quite a bit deeper than it first seemed like it might be, dropping well past his lantern's light. The air is cool and humid, however, and the rope seems to be intact. Giving it a tug, there is weight on the end.
Dornikal and Coljin (and his dragonborn) move along the far wall from Randy and the well.

Re: The Sundered Way
Randy hauls up on the rope, and immediately notes that the mechanism had been set to not plunge all the way into the water below. As it comes up, the bucket on the end has a bundle wrapped in oiled hide in it, but dry, as it had not been able to be submerged.
Pulling it up, and unwrapping the bundle, he finds notes scrawled in archaic draconic on a roll of thin hide.
The dragonborn wish to see it, and when it's translated into Common for those that don't read draconic, you realize that it's likely the last words of one of the dragonborn who was here when the mine was overrun.
In summary, it describes how the mine broke a through rubble choked corridor to a chamber riddled with holes and tunnels, but that things seemed abandoned, and there was a lot of gems to be collected right off the ground... as well as items that didn't belong. Weapons, armor, much of it fallen to rust and decay. Perhaps it was a It was odd, but potentially of benefit to the People. But something had been hibernating in there, sealed up in a wall, a Great Queen, who slew the first crew before waking her children from their slumber. They moved quick, half of their force defending the queen while the other half fought their way to the surface and sealed the entrance from escape. Those few miners that survived the initial onslaught were hunted down. The miner that wrote the record knew she was going to die, but hoped that leaving a warning against the Queen might help whatever help might come. From the writing, it seems she was hoping to make it above the entrance and leave a reflective bit of polished metal to draw future forces to her letter, but she didn't make it to the surface.

Re: The Sundered Way
"Well, now we know what happened. They accidentally broke into their nest. And this could be an indication of about how many are left if they're still following the same pattern. We may have taken care of the offensive half and now have the defensive half left. Plus the queen. And we have to take into account that there could be specialized defense bugs. Guard bugs so to speak."
He turns back to the well. "Let's check and see if we have drinkable water while we're here."
He lowers the bucket all the way down this time.
