50% evolution: grow another eye (with tentacle to mount on, as needed), develop depth perception (vital for triangulation with ranged weapon like the harpoon) and the ability to see color.

50% evolution: The wing/fin-like appendages on your sides grow in great length from your body, giving you a boost in speed and turning accuracy.

Food Hoarding (50+): 78 (Success)
Longer Tentacles (70+): 37 (Nope)
Universal Tentacles (95+): 39 (Nope)
Death to The Young (50+): 72 (Success)
Harpoon Tongue (50+): 48 (Nope)
Shallow Water Hiding (50+): 21 (Nope)
Second Eye (50+): 12 (Nope)
Larger Fins (50+): 77 (Success)

At the 3.5 Billion Years mark, E. Goblinus Yenaii has been swimming about minding its own business and trying to kill all the W. Xymbii Rex it can come across. During that time it tries multiple strategies to try to survive, the first (and most successful) being that of food hoarding. It captures its prey in the ice, and adds pieces of its shell, which chemically delays melting in the warm waters by raising the melting point of the ice. It's a good idea, but P. Yalaii Pankobol is so big it just swallows the ice cubes whole while W. Xymbii Rex evolves heavy heat generation, enabling escape from the ice. E. Goblinus counters by trying to stretch its tentacles out and "universally" adapting them so that one can do the work of all four for four times the fun, but the extra length enables P. Yalaii Pankobol (and to a lesser extent I. Dracorex Harpii) to strike from a greater distance. You've lost three inches of length on your overall size, and because you were constantly trying to defend yourself or hide you had no time to develop "universal" tentacles.

E. Goblinus decides that it's had enough of P. Yalaii's fartpoopery and goes right after its young as a new food source. An unexpected side evolution of this is that it develops a "second" mouth inside the first, two thirds down the tentacle. It can "shed" its original mouth and while P. Yalaii goes after the decoy, E. Goblinus sneaks in and snacks on eggs and young. This drives down the numbers of P. Yalaii and drives up the numbers of W. Xymbii Rex, but W. Xymbii Rex now knows to keep away from P. Yalaii; your predators are its indirect predators. In order to strike and get away quickly, E. Goblinus tries to evolve at first a sticky tongue and then a sharp harpoon tongue inside the mouth... but this is countered by faster reflexes of P. Yalaii (who evolves jellyfish-like tentacles at its bottom to catch the tongue in a sticky-trap) and W. Xymbii Rex evolves speed to outrun the tongue or just be where E. Goblinus is hanging around.

In order to hide from P. Yalaii (who has evolved a scorpion-like tail on the back of its head, replacing one of its eyes), E. Goblinus turns to hiding in shallow waters where P. Yalaii is too big to follow, since it can't breathe oxygen (yet). During this time E. Goblinus tries to evolve a second eye in front of it by splitting the original eye into two halves. Neither of these tricks work; P. Yalaii learns to breach and leap out of the water to hunt (like a fox pouncing a mouse) and immediately aims for this "second eye" that doesn't get much of a chance to develop. The second eye just winds up as a food storage chunk on the end of a strand of muscle; for a time it serves as food but it later turns into a cancerous mutation that is eventually shed. On top of this, W. Xymbii Rex is not yet found in shallow waters in great numbers, lowering the food supply a little bit.

Finally, your fins have almost tripled in size, enabling you to speed away from the heavy, slow P. Yalaii. You're caught quite a bit by I. Dracorex but you're bigger than it is and your shell usually is sufficient to ward off its striker (its claw has become serrated, and usually does more damage than the stinger does). An unexpected result of the big fins is that when you leap out of the water to escape P. Yalaii... the fins are slowly becoming something more useful: webbed membranes! You're able to glide through the air, and are beginning to evolve oxygen processing organs (precursors of lungs) in order to stay above water for as long as possible. While not wings (yet?), they're a possibility. On top of that, you're not alone in the air and you located a new food source (C. Curia Volturii, an electric-shock generating proto-bird with an air bladder it fills with poison blood to spew). Your tentacles grab it in mid-air, the mouth end curls around to freeze or blood drain it, and it drops into the water and drowns.

Your prime habitat right now is now shallow seas. Do you retreat to the depths to escape, or do you go inland where P. Yalaii cannot follow? Should you decide to go inland, this next turn will be "mudskipper" -esque, and there will be land predators (and prey!) if you decide to go inland and begin to "learn to walk" either on your tentacles or turn your membranes to precursors of legs. If you retreat to the depths, you will lose the protobird as a food source (although W. Xymbii Rex hasn't populated shallow waters... yet).

Current Survival Chance is now 67%. Onward to Round 2! How Do You Evolve? That... coulda gone better... and yes, you can try previous evolutions again but the failures will be stronger next time... fuckin' dice...

End Results:

Food Hoarding (Survival +7%), but bigger predators swallowing ice cubes whole (Survival -1%) and prey's heat evolution means ice melts and it escapes (Survival -1%).
Longer Tentacles failed; predators are chewing the longer tentacles off, lose 3 inches of length (Survival -2%) and no time to develop universal abilities, too busy defending oneself.
Death to The Young (Survival +7%) means bigger predator population lowered, but now stronger teeth and armor, you cannot outfight them (Survival +1%). Prey becomes more abundant but knows to flee from your predators; your predators are its indirect predators (Survival -2%).
Harpoon Tongue failed; bigger predator evolves reflexes to bite off tongue (Survival -1%) and Prey evolves speed to avoid (Survival -2%).
Shallow Water Hiding fails; bigger predator breaches, hunts like a fox (Survival -2%) and prey not found in shallow water yet (Survival -2%).
Second Eye fails; bigger predator finds "bad eye" as "more meat" (Survival -1%) and for a time, bad eye detatchable as extra food (Survival +1%) but later turns cancerous
Larger Fins (Survival +10%); bigger predators refine their breaches but can't catch you well (Survival -1%) and new source of prey located as Larger Fins become membranes (Survival +4%)

50% Evolution Chance: two of the wing like appendages extend into something that look like feet, while the other two become larger and fuller, filling in with a leathery material which can catch the wind. While not allowing true flight, you can now glide or catch a warm wind to gain height. This allows you to swoop down on unsuspecting prey and carry them off.

I've rolled these but will wait for one or two more before I apply them (two rolls were less than 10 and only -one- roll was higher than 50+). The dice were NOT your friend this turn but even a couple of negative traits during the evolution process added to survival.

Edit again: *rolls M0rt* Well, at least his made it... I'll write the post tonight, wait for Synch to show up with an evolution, and post it tomorrow.

I have two ideas but we really need improved sight so.....

50% (hopefully) evolution - Improved eyes - Using various attempts of using its ice/crystal forming abilities to protect it eye from the poison air bladder prey; a lens has formed over its eye which has improved both colour and precision. In addition it can add/remove extra ice to this lens to further refracted light to see in different spectrum's.

Membranes to Wings and Feet (50+): 23 (Nope)
Heat Control (50+): 34 (Nope)
Membranes Control (50+): 33 (Nope)
Segmented Shell (50+): 7 (Nope)
Mouth Processes Earth (70%+): 92 (Success)
Supertunneler (95+): 17 (Nope)
Two Segment Exoskeleton (50+): 5 (Nope)
Third set of Fins (50+): 73 (Success)
Improved Vision (50+): 49 (Nope) ........... wow, robbed

We're at Four Billion Years and counting. E. Goblinus Yenaii has been busily adapting during this time period, trying to outdo P. Yalaii Pankobol at every turn. The going is NOT easy. Trying to capitalize on the power of flight, its front fins adapt to what try to become feet so as to give it a running start, but really end up only skeletal fins with no webbing (potential precursor to feet, though). P. Yalaii counters this by evolving a jet under its body, so that it "rocketjumps" out of the water from below, trying to catch you. When it lands with a splash (releasing an explosive chemical from its eyes on landing) it scares away W. Xymbii Rex (and indeed, just about everything else). E. Goblinus attempts to convert its oxygen processor organs to heat sources, so as to expel warm carbon dioxide and give yourself a means to fly, but instead the heat generators interfered with your ability to produce HC3, which is now used by the body in all of its processes (meaning a lack of frost breath if overused).

E. Goblinus attempts to evolve an easier time of controlling its time in the air, but the little spikes that come about only serve to increase drag and further negate flight instead of enhance it. You haven't lost your gliding abilities, but if this keeps up, you'll lose the ability to fly entirely. Another attempted evolution included a segmented shell that could allow its softer parts to be pulled in when either not in use or in defense, but this had an unintentional effect of weakening your shell in a big way, allowing P. Yalaii to smash you to smithereens if it landed on you from a direct hit from a "rocketjump".

While at this point creatures wouldn't know fear, E. Goblinus was in trouble and it knew it. It decided to dive into the continental shelf, using its tentacles to tunnel through the softer sands while its mouth tentacle sucked up whatever it could find. Sometimes it found the lucky corpse of a dead W. Xymbii Rex, most of the time it was still filter feeding whatever it came across. Over time ingesting all this side metal, tiny volcanic glass fragments, toxin, and other garbage allows the shell both to increase its strength for defense as well as thin the diameter of the shell and allow for greater speed through both ground and water. On top of this, the front four tentacles are now armored in a thin glass shell, while the eyeball is now on a long armored stalk much like a thick muscle coated in lizard-like scales. The eye tried to evolve a nice lens to protect it from the water as well as give it color sight, but the ice/silicon/etc chemicals used only served to make it blurry vision. This made it tough to find good spots to dig and lowered your population slightly.

It began to adapt other hollow areas for more organs to grow in and specialize, but the brain began to grow in size as well and quickly fit into these areas... and ended up nearly short-circuiting itself. Not all short circuiting is bad though, as this may open the way for interesting... effects at some point. The central bone where the brain is housed is now as big as three human fists, and is steadily growing.

Finally, a third set of fins evolves on the end of the mouth tentacle. These two are shaped as shovels or trowels, granting you speed as you push out through the water. They also serve to dig through the sand behind you while the tentacles tunnel ahead, granting an immense amount of sand and loose soils for the mouth tentacle to sift through. These two layer over the mouth tentacle as a sort of "trapdoor" in the same way a trapdoor spider works in ambush. As luck would have it, W. Xymbii Rex loves your tunnels, as they prevent P. Yalaii and other things from getting at them, shell or not.

I. Dracorex Harpii has gone extinct. C. Curia Volturii is becoming endangered from the stronger things on land.

I wrote this before remembering to put you further inland (thought next turn was mudskipper, not this one as it was supposed to be). Instead of in the primordial environments such as forests and such, you guys are still on cold beaches and sandbars. I'll put you in further next turn, and give an option for a fourth turn.

Current Survival Chance is now 71%. Would have probably been much higher but damn those dice rolls!

You have a choice: Remain underground as a digger (turning your front "skeletal" fins to digging claws, potential loss of sight), mudskip on land by turning those skeletal fins to feet (talons), mudskip on land by turning your tentacles to feet (losing some of their use, especially warning tentacle length), or focus mainly on your rear winged membranes and attempt to rule the skies, turning them from gliding extremities to passable wings?

You have a choice of where to go inland now. You can go further north to icebergs and the ice sheet (lack of predators, but also likely lack of prey) because of your cold immunity, you can remain "north-ish" (rocky, cold evergreen environment), you can migrate south to a temperate region (pick an environment; will naturally gain heat control which might put a dent in your HC3... but will turn your frost breath to a toxic acid spit), or you can attempt to hold out in a tropical zone (abundance of food, potential strong extra mutations, but you're currently suited for cold).

You can attempt any evolution you attempted this round with a +3 bonus to the roll (because some of these are very good and logical and useful and I'd hate to throw them aside). If it fails, Survival goes down an additional 3% as the "forced evolution" goes bad.

Onward to Round 3! How Do You Evolve? That lucky low-chance mutation made up for all the horrible horrible rolls...

End Results:

Membranes to Wings and Feet failed, as it granted very poor manuverability and extra weight. Cannot use feet as talons to grip prey (yet?); P. Yalaii "rocketjumps" in a series of rapid breaches, scaring away prey while trying to land on you. (Survival -2%)
Heat Control failed, and indeed, heat generation interfered with your ability to prduce HC3, meaning less frost breath to capture with. HC3 now main catalyst for frost breath if that wasn't already noticed. (Survival -4%)
Membranes Control failed, as the minature spikes increase drag, further negating flight (Survival -1%).
Segmented Shell failed; instead the segments make the body brittle, weakening shell and allowing P. Yalaii to smash you to bits on landing (Survival -2%).
Mouth Processes Earth allows digestion of toxins, metals, sand, glass; shell strength increased while thickness decreased. Tentacles and eyeball are now armored. (Survival +11%)
Supertunneler failed; tunnel speed remains slow, but prey uses holes dug as hideyholes. (Survival +3%)
Two Segment Exoskeleton didn't work; the "brain" in the central orb moved into the hollow exoskeleton parts and ended up haywiring itself for behavior mutations. These behavior mutations might give rise to early intelligence later. (Survival -3%)
Third set of Fins grow at the end of the mouth tentacle, shaped like shovels/trowels. While digging tunnels, these fold over to conceal the mouth and wait for a prey ambush you sense with blindsight (Survival +3%).
Refractive Lens over the eye fails; the lens has too many imperfections and did not improve vision. (Survival -1%)

50% Evolution Chance: develop increased breeding (higher numbers of progeny) and also some sort of care for the young (e.g. building a nest/den/whatever and keeping an eye on the offspring until they are grown enough to fend for themselves). The increased family bonding from this leads to hunting/traveling/living in packs (or herds, or clans or whatever you want to call it), which allows individuals to 'specify' in the smallest of ways according to their suitability to each task.

If I did it any higher and you got good rolls you'd pierce 95% easily. I'm sort of handwaving it with an "Evolution is hard!" excuse (especially with the rolls in the last turn... oy). I may fudge a little here and there if we get another repeat performance (or simply ignore that part and not penalize as hard as I said I would), or again if we decide on a 4th turn. I'll wait for one or two more evolution ideas/re-attempts then roll and write.
