I think re-exams are around that period so I can't be completely certain how that's going to interfere with the plans. Hopefully it won't impact the trip :P

I'm now booked. I'll be arriving Tuesday the 5th, departing Monday the 18th. I'll be staying at The Nadler Kenstington. It is, surprisingly enough, in South Kensington (between the Earl's Court and Gloucester Road Tube stops). It was the kitchenette that sold me. (Important for a diabetic with sleeping disorders to always have food readily available.)

Alright three choices here...
I can choose between a hotel in Greenwich, Hyde Park, or Canary Wharf at the moment...

Any guidance would be appreciated...

Hyde Park is more central, and it's got the parks around. If there is no price or quality preference, take Hyde Park.

I hear Greenwich can be a mean neighborhood at times.

LOL. Greenwich itself is quite lovely, but it's a bit of a trek to the rest of London. And Canary Wharf is also a bit out of the way and really only uses the Jubilee line from what I remember. Might be off on that one. But Hyde Park is definitely more "central".

Well, I'm staying at Clink261 which is right near King's Cross station - which is most likely where you'll arrive from a train in Europe.

Also, to others: while picking dates is tough when you can't think that far in advance... accommodations will become more scarce, especially the ones with the best quality for their price.

Especially with it being the run-up to WorldCon - more people than usual may be descending on the local hostels.

I would like to come along and attend the con, but my schedule does vary. Chances are I could come for a weekend, but probably not more than that. If the con isn't in a weekend, I'd be more than happy to visit a pub or whatever with you guys, because you seem like good people ;)
I will follow this thread and I'll let you guys and gals know ;)

EDIT: That does mean that you guys and gals wouldn't mind if I came along of course!
I feel smart, but I'm pretty sure I'm an idiot.

It's a Goblins Invasion. The keyword there is: Invasion. Invasions are always more successful when there is a higher number of invaders... ;)

The Con is on a week. August 14-18. Others might be around then, but I'll be in Iceland.

Yes we are launching an invasion...
The battle with Prince George on Bosworth Field is scheduled for the 13th...

To be clear: The World Science Fiction Convention (aka WorldCon aka LonCon) will be August 14-18. The Goblins invasion/meet-up will be August 4 - 12. Which does indeed include a weekend. Join us for whatever part of that works for you. :)

Is there something like a pass/time ticket for mass/public transportation in the London area? And could I buy it at the airport already?

Just checked this out, yes there is a Pass that is available for the Tube and buses and the price reflects what zones you are able to do...

Quarg - you must have lots of extra money :P

Using the tube from Heathrow to King's Cross is easy - you don't have to switch trains at all, and it's easy access from Heathrow (and as it's the end of the line, the only people getting on ALSO have luggage and there's no one else on the train).

You will want to get an Oyster card. For the most part, you'll want to get a 1-2 Zone pass for the week as that's where we'll mostly all be. You'll need to also put a bit of cash on it too to get from Heathrow, and if we head out towards Greenwich or anything that leaves zone 2. Won't need much though and it's easy to add on more. You can purchase it at any of the ticket places and definitely at Heathrow. :)

Actually read up on the Oyster Card and almost identical to the DC Metro's current card system except for the whole 'zone' thing...

I am going to clarify something:

The hostel I'm staying at, Clink261, is NOT female-only. The particular dorm I'm staying in is female-only. I think I underestimated general knowledge of hostels ;) Most hostels have female-only rooms along with mixed rooms.
