((It's small and will have a small bording house. The villages along the road are used to travelers and get a good deal of income from them. Not very friendly but not unfriendly.))

Another day and a half of travel and you can drop them off, based on Ves' plan.

As the sun sets behind the group the shadows of the trees grow long around them before everything blends into uniform darkness.
Ves leads the way forward, clearly seeing better in the dark than her horse. After 30 minutes of slower than usual riding both she and Jaq hear something in the woods to the north. It isn't immediately by the road but it is close. It also seems to be large and not concerned by the noise it is making.
Jolly realizes something at that point and says, tapping his glowing chest,
"Hey, wait... Ya made me into a glowing target!"
The sounds to the north stop at his comment.

Jaq moves him and his horse to the south side of the roadway. If the group decides to stop and make a stand at some point, if we aren't in melee yet, he will dismount and hide on the shadows on that side of the roadway. But he will only dismount if we all stop.

Whatever was making the noise begins moving towards the road. It still isn't visible in the woods but it's close enough that the group can hear sniffing between the crunch of undergrowth.
Jolly looks around and loud whispers to Ves,
"What is it?"
The sniffing stops at that and a very loud, very near shriek is heard in the forest to the north. Half a second later another shriek can be heard further to the east. A moment after that another shriek responds deeper in the forest.

Injured though he is, Lurn moves his horse to the fore, "If they aren't immediately hostile, I can attempt to communicate with the creatures. While my kind cannot understand beasts, we have developed our ability to convey our intentions and wills to them. Though I will admit, I am not the most persuasive of men."

((Well... 19 - 2 = 17. Yup, Kroshav is only working with 7 INT. My Religion check on Lurn's god was a -1 (Nat 1 rolled -2), which is why Kroshav thinks he worships Kevin.))

Lurn and Joe can't quite place the shriek, it sounds like a hawk or other raptor's call but why would it be on the ground making so much noise?
From their time out in the forests of the world both Ves and Kroshav recognize the destinctive call of a hunting owlbear.
Everyone hears something crashing through the forest directly towards Kroshav as well as two more shrieks to the east and north respectively.

Lurn Initiative: 1D20+1 = [15]+1 = 16
Lurn climbs down from his horse, unlimbering mace and shield. While bandits wouldn't hurt the horse, a beast may, and if he's mounted that would make his horse the easier target.
