Doodlemoogle's arts and farts

Post by DoodleMoogle » Tue May 20, 2014 11:14 pm

Hello there. I'm new to the forum. I mean this is literally the third thing I'm going to post here. That's fresh.
Well, besides from being a fantasy nerd and overall a gigantic geek I am also an art student.
Obviously I have an unhealthy obsession for fantasy creatures and characters and therefore I draw that stuff all the time.
Would you like to look? Let's do this friend. :)

We're going to start with some goblin art. I have a D&D character that I will most likely never get to play because of my social anxiety and the
fact that it's hard as hell to find people to play with in Finland. My character is a goblin rogue by the name of Scabbs.
This character is actually right there as my avatar. (Unless this is the faaaar future and I've changed it in which case this is kind of awkward and makes me look like an idiot. :? )

[thumbnail]http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2014/ ... 7j5i7f.png[/thumbnail]

We're going to be going through an evolution of this character. This picture of the character is from, ohh... Two years ago? Sounds about right.

[thumbnail]http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/ ... 5mb5od.png[/thumbnail]

I am not sure how long there was between the works but we're going to see the character change drastically. I eventually find a desgin that I like a lot. It's not this one.

[thumbnail]http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/ ... 638zxn.png[/thumbnail]

In this piece I found one of the design choices that I've stuck with this character since this piece. It's the placement of the two daggers.(Yes, they're daggers. He's tiny.)
One across Scabbs' shoulders and the other hanging at the right side of his hip. There is just something I love about the asymmetrical placement.

[thumbnail]http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2013/ ... 62dtb7.png[/thumbnail]

Nothing exciting. Basically the same picture as the previous one, only in a different style.

[thumbnail]http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2013/ ... 63i80u.png[/thumbnail]

This piece actually is related to Scabbs' backstory. As a giant nerd I've of course written a lenghty backstory for my D&D character.
I've literally designed a city just for this one character. Yeah...

[thumbnail]http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2013/ ... d63ec9a.pn[/thumbnail]

I'm not very happy with this one, but it has Scabbs in the picture so I feel like I need to include it in this list of this characters appearences.

[thumbnail]http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2014/ ... 7j5ids.png[/thumbnail]

It's actually a lot of fun to go through these pictures of Scabbs. I get to see so many different ways I've drawn the character. Some are kind of awful.

[thumbnail]http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2014/ ... 77ribw.png[/thumbnail]

This one is very recent work at this point. After taking a lengthy break from drawing this character I came back to him and made some changes to his design.
Clothes mostly. I chose to go with a darker color for his tunic as I flt it just looked better with his bright skin.
It's actually kind of funny how the color of his clothes has had a complete pigment change over these pictures.

[thumbnail]http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2014/ ... 7j0q9l.png[/thumbnail]

I drew this basically yesterday. I really like the way the lighting turned out.
I don't draw enough backgrounds in my pictures and that usually means there is not a light source that affects my thinking. It's kind of a bad habit I have.
I've been trying to fix that by adding at least some basic background to most of my pictures.

Well then, I think that'll do for now. I have some other fantasy art that I'd love to talk about so I'll probably throw some more up in this topic when I feel like it.
Hope you've enjoyed this. I certainly have. :P

Wow, those are incredibly cool! Have you followed an art study or did you just practice a lot?
I'm quite jealous, I have quite a few incredibly cool characters from D&D sessions I've played (one par example was a gnome sorcerer, who used all his equipment for magic and looked kind of like a street artist), but I simply do not have the talent and/or practice to actually draw them :(
I feel smart, but I'm pretty sure I'm an idiot.

I'm an art student and I've been studying art seriosly for the past three years. I was in another art school for two years before that, but I wasn't really paying attention at that point. (I feel terrible for my teachers from back then.)
Also I like to think I've been developing artistically in leaps and bounds for the last couple of years, so I have a bit more self confidence than before. I used to destroy all evidence of my old works, because they burned my eyes.
Now however I like to look back to see how I've changed. That actually reminds me that I send Thunt some fanart years ago when I was just getting into digitally coloring my art. It's actually still up in the fanart section. Take a look. :P

[thumbnail]http://www.goblinscomic.org/wp-content/ ... snames.jpg[/thumbnail]

I wish I had more of my drawings from 5+ years back so I could put them back online. Nothing survived the purging flames unfortunately. RIP terrible things.

EDIT

While I'm at it I might as well put up some more art I've done that I'd like to show folks.
I don't have as much to say about each one of these as with the Scabbs series, but they are what they are.

Today I'll put up some art where I tried to concentrate on the background since I'm so bad at drawing them.

The perspectives in some of these. Ooh. It hurts. >:?

I gotta keep practicing with backgrounds. I just can't seem to make them seem alive. (Probably because most of the stuff I've drawn are ruins.)

Time for more arts.

Let's start with some dragons. You like dragons, right?
With this first one I tried to go for a more serpent like look.
[thumbnail]http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2013/ ... 5qbkzj.png[/thumbnail]

This next one is a glorified scribble, but I kind of like how it looks.

Dragolich

Black dragon

A Eastern dragonborn
[thumbnail]http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2013/ ... 5wfcrr.png[/thumbnail]

And finally, a dragonborn getting plastered
[thumbnail]http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/ ... 6uio45.png[/thumbnail]

That's it for dragons. I'll put some more art I did for some D&D NPCs in the last couple of years.

Bear druid

Beardless dwarf scholar, extra crispy

That's actually true for many of these characters. I did a lot of this art for an online D&D game where they used the art for the npcs. Like that dracolich for example. The players in that game slapped these sunglasses that they had made as a separate character just to mess around right on that dragons head. Bam! Coolest undead dragon you'll ever meet.

Alright. It's time for some more art. I'm reaching the point that the art is going to start look pretty terrible. It's fine though. Let's see what I have left.

First up is a gnome lich I drew for that online D&D game.
[thumbnail]http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/ ... 5i9q5g.png[/thumbnail]

Next is the character of one of the players. A dragonborn ranger.
[thumbnail]http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/ ... 5fn7md.png[/thumbnail]

A wizard from a roleplaying game called Praedor. (You'll probably not find any info of it. Hasn't been translated to english.)
[thumbnail]http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/ ... 5eulyd.png[/thumbnail]

A wizard from Praedor, but in COLOR
[thumbnail]http://th08.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/f/2 ... 53dqgr.png[/thumbnail]

This one I drew after coming up with a character I'd like to play in Praedor. I got the idea of stealing the concept of the Scarecrow from Batman after reading the alchemy section of the gamebook.
Player characters can't be spellcasters in Praedor because magic is basically godly power that is strictly kept secret by the ancient bloodlines of wizards. Mortals can however become alchemists that specialize in
potions that have very weak magical properties that the wizards have let out over hundreds of years. Alchemists can also make poisons. This characters idea was to make a contraption on his arm where he would keep ground up poison mushroom powder that causes those sprayed with it to hallucinate horrible visions. He would then cut them down as they were tripping balls.
[thumbnail]http://th00.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/f/2 ... 532zhj.png[/thumbnail]

An aquatic beast
[thumbnail]http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/ ... 5e0i5e.png[/thumbnail]

Adventuring party
[thumbnail]http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2012/ ... 5aehwl.png[/thumbnail]

Don't split the party
[thumbnail]http://th03.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/i/2 ... 54myt5.png[/thumbnail]

Magic sword, part time torch
[thumbnail]http://th03.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/i/2 ... 54ddf3.png[/thumbnail]

I was playing World of warcraft when I drew this one
[thumbnail]http://th03.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/f/2 ... 53i1zu.png[/thumbnail]

Man-scropion
[thumbnail]http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/ ... 50zp7r.png[/thumbnail]

That'll do for now I think.

We're reaching the point that the works I'm going to put here are three years old or older. I have a couple of pieces I can stomach to show so I'll be postinga couple more.

Let's see what I can find.

[thumbnail]http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/ ... 4z5842.png[/thumbnail]
This one was origanally supposed to be in the artstyle of Zelda: Windwaker, but I just couldn't get a handle on the style of that game.

[thumbnail]http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/ ... 4yzu7d.png[/thumbnail]
This one was also supposed to mimic Windwaker style, again, didin't work out. It's also a self portrait.
Being from Finland I get to pretend I'm some sort of badass barbarian with ice in my veins, but if we're being honest here I'm just a lazy nerd. Can't stop me from pretending though.

[thumbnail]http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/ ... 4yrkfl.png[/thumbnail]
Warforged

[thumbnail]http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/ ... 4y42yb.png[/thumbnail]
Generic assasin

[thumbnail]http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/ ... 4x2v8c.png[/thumbnail]
Surrealistic self portrait I did for a school assignment

[thumbnail]http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/ ... 4x2urn.png[/thumbnail]
Some sort of undead dancer?

[thumbnail]http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2011/ ... 4gn63t.png[/thumbnail]
Frogman

[thumbnail]http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2011/ ... 4ep7yu.png[/thumbnail]
Lizardman

[thumbnail]http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2011/ ... 4elfmc.png[/thumbnail]

Demon

[thumbnail]http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2011/ ... 3f8ml3.png[/thumbnail]

Next time I'll post some of the older works. They're awful. :)

Here's something quick I drew tonight.

[thumbnail]http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2014/ ... 7nyutv.png[/thumbnail]

It started off as a simple sketch, but I ended up coloring it. The snow doesn't really look that good since you can't tell how it's really shaped. It's all just billowy mush.

I freaking love comics, but I absolutely blow at writing compelling stories. It's mostly the character interactions I can't get a proper grasp on.
I have no problems coming up with interesting surroundings and such, but when I find myself having to write two characters having a regular conversation. Total meltdown.
I do plan to get over that some day and make a comic or two.

Thanks! I love the foreground in that picture. I probably spent too much time laying out the bricks and moss on that balcony and not enough figuring out how perspective works on backgrounds.
The landscape looks a bit skewed. I guess it's appropriate for the setting I based this picture on.
It's from this tabletop game that is set in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world with chaotic magics messing up the laws of the universe. (Including perspective :P )

I guess since I keep poking my nose in here without saying anything I should say that your work is pretty impressive (even the old ones we've been warned of being not as good). Might I ask what medium/program you've been using?

Also, I don't know whether I have fond memories of people running around with kitchen implements on their heads or not, but Pothead up there is awesome. It is not too much of an oxymoron to say lovely placement of dirt.

Thanks a bunch! I wasn't kidding when I said I get a jolt of energy whenever someone says something about my work. It always makes my day awesome! :D
I do my art in Photoshop CS6 with a Wacom Tablet for drawing. Before my current school, which I've been studying at for the last three years I had no tablet and most of my drawings were done with
basic markers, cleaned of sketches and then colored in Photoshop. The latest pictures I posted are some of those old works.
I also like watercolors, but I haven't really done any art with them in a long time so I'm pretty rusty at it by now. On the other hand I feel that my digital work has been getting better. :)

It was fun to draw the Pothead piece. The internet was broken that night so I had plenty of time to just draw and mess around. It came out as a pretty funny looking character and I had a lot of fun drawing the picture.
The whole time I was drawing I was salivating at the tought of when I'd get to add the rust and dirt when I was adding the finishing touches. It was really satisfying. :P

Oh, a fabulous dragon, that's something I could use for a one shot!
"Kill the dragon, adventurers!"
Entering the dragon cave: dragon painting his claws and re-arranging his heap of gold to be more aesthetically pleasing. Turns out not to be evil at all, but actually the boss of a huge bank that helps provide peasant with safe, low-cost loans and the king is actually evil for trying to monopolize the bank world.
That'd be great!

I really like the action shot of the orc attack, but it does seem that some details are out of place in accordance to lack of detail elsewhere in the drawing. It sure seems like an interesting scene playing out there, especially with the tower being blown to bits (in which the "destruction poof" looks REALLY cool :D )

There are so many things wrong in that picture, but to be fair it is at least 6 years old. The bright colors on the dull grey background hurts my eyes.
