Just a couple of days left. No entries yet. Who's working on something? Should I extend the deadline?

Not working on anything for this one - not feeling inspired by the theme.

Fair enough. Got any good ideas for next month's theme?

I did have one idea for a story; Young and Beautiful and one of the elder goblins (either Asks Nonsense or Taps) were once romantically attached, and had a son (Ears? Fumbles? Dies?) ... If that starts anyone on a story they want to write, I don't have time for it.

For the next theme, maybe minor character backstory, lots of scope for different styles/interests:

Have you even wondered what happened in that minor throw-away scene? What leads up to an adventurer earning roleplaying XP for "doing his business"? Where are those elves coming from? Where did Dellyn acquire his owlbear? Write the backstory of an interesting minor event, character or item.

Nope, I'm not gonna try romance, er writing a romance story.

Well, it doesn't have to be romance, per se. Just a tale of an unlikely pairing.

But I like the suggestion for the new prompt. Thing is, I'll be very busy next month. We can either leave it until November or someone else can run it in October.

I'm putting the contest on hiatus. I didn't get any entries for this month, and I'll be very busy next month. If anyone wants to take over, please let me know.

Show of hands: Anyone interested in giving this another go? December may be a bad time. January? Or should I just forget it and chalk up to a good try?

Basically, I am interested.
I just don't know whether I would have the time to write something down....

And December may even be a better time for me, more days off to pursue one-off hobbies....

Anyone else? A contest of one is no contest at all.

Re: Monthly Fic Contest: Live or Die?

I'm interested in general, but my participation is dependent on whether I like the topic or not. Alternate was good. Romance, not so much. For me.

Detective style Noir might be funny to write, but it is REALLY alternate.

I do try to leave flexibility in the prompts. Noir lends itself to unlikely romance quite neatly, I think. But I'm definitely open to ideas and suggestions. In fact, I'd appreciate them a lot.

I'm interested, but my personal time has been basically nonexistent lately, so I unfortunately can't commit to anything.

Live. We could do alternate realities no problem. Or we can just switch the genre, the setting or both.

Superheroes.
Under The Sea.
Pulp
Film Noir
Steampunk
Modern-Day Urban Fantasy
A "Friends" style spin-off

We could throw them into different situations:
Fumble's birthday is tomorrow and absolutely everyone is invited, even the villians! Can they stop him from wrecking his own party? What gifts will they bring?
The Goblins learn that they are being filmed for a reality show (in-world or parallel) and everyone around them are actors playing to a script.
Kore's armour opens to reveal a small alien being and suddenly spaceships full of Kores are dropping from the sky!

Stuff like that.
NOTE TO ALL THOSE I AM GAMING WITH: Currently gaming with others in the Sacred Statue Garden.

I'm new to the forums, but I'd love to read other's fanfics (I apparently don't have enough posts yet, boo). Unfortunately, I don't have the skills to write anything myself...so I guess my vote is moot.
But I think the idea of a contest sounds like it was pretty neat. Hopefully you can pick up some interest soon-ish.

PS: I think a Christmas (or winter holiday?) themed story contest would be interesting.

Okay, we've got some interest. Let's get this thing rolling for January. Suggested prompts:

Superheroes.
Under The Sea.
Pulp
Film Noir
Steampunk
Modern-Day Urban Fantasy
A "Friends" style spin-off
Winter Holiday

Some of those seem pretty far from the source material, but sometimes that just makes it all more fun and interesting. Quick show of virtual hands: Which prompt would you like to use? Pick your top three, we'll see what's popular, and go with it.

My top three:

1) Steampunk
2) Modern-Day Urban Fantasy
3) "Friends" style spin-off.

1) Winter Holiday
4) "Friends" style spin-off
4) Modern-Day urban fantasy
4) Superheroes
4) Pulp
4) Film Noir

Actually, Winter Holiday is my real pick, the rest all come the same, with the notable exception of steampunk, which I do not like.

1, Noir
2, Steampunk

I think I'd have to think harder for the others. So hard I'd probably not participate.

Be specific. When is the end date? I don't see it on this page of the thread, so I assumed it would be the end of January.

The first post says that the deadline is the 17th. Which allows people time to read and vote before we start the cycle again.

For clarification: Wearshats has been editing the first post with updates on the contest, rather than creating new posts. That way, people don't have to scroll through a bunch of stuff to figure out what's going on each time.

Yes, and I make sure to write a new post at the end, and, if appropriate, update the topic, so that you know there's something new.
