Reading a adapted word from German out of the blue like that is kind of funny, but also strange.
Schadenfreude is too useful of a word to not steal it for our own language. For anyone who doesn't know what schadenfreude is, roughly translated to English it would mean "The enjoyment of seeing other people suffering", which is nowhere near as elegant as just saying schadenfreude. Only problem is that I always miss letters when typing, and in schadenfreude I can't work out where I went wrong, so I actually have to resort to autocorrect. :|

... That and the one statement, "Aber ja, nat├╝rlich Hans nass ist, er steht unter einem Wasserfall."
Naturally Hans is wet, he's standing under a waterfall.
It was popularized around here by the musical Avenue Q, which had a song about it. It works better in the larger context of the show, though, which often goes to uncomfortable and potentially offensive places. Other songs include "The Internet Is For Porn" and "Everybody Is A Little Bit Racist." And there's also a scene of very explicit puppet on puppet sex which lasts for several minutes.
Mostly offline/inactive due to chronic health issues. PM me if you really need attention.

Actually the word order would be a bit different, in German the verb comes first so:
Nat├╝rlich ist Hans nass, [...]

Sorry to correct but grammar is a bit of a pet peeve of mine ;)
And I agree with nerre it's weird to see a German word in the middle of a sentence.

Eh, it doesn't upset me for you to correct it, the only German word I really know is schadenfreude.

I think you might also know kindergarten. :)

I think the way Schadenfreude got described here sounded a bit too negative. It is not only "liking to see others suffer", this would be rather sadistic, malice. It is finding it funny to see people getting into dumb or negative situations, often cause of their own fault and stupiditiy. A bit like "He could have earned a Darwin award like that" or "In this case, stupidity DOES hurt!". Or if you do something others told you not to do and you fail. Higher justice. In nearly every country there are tv serials with funny videos. But mostly they are not too severe, or at least you don't see it, so the fun from watching it is larger than the sympathy/pity you feel for those people. Especially since sympathy/pity might be lowered by people causing the situation by a bad decision. Like jumping from a roof with a bike and failing badly, or trying to jump over a swimming pool, but not really making it and hitting the opposite edge. Sometimes there has to be a comical element in the situation, a bit slap stick, self-infliction. You find the situation funny, but sometimes even suffer with the person and don't want it to really get hurt.

If you really hate somebody, maybe even wish death on him, it is not Schadenfreude. It is rather malice.

At least this is how I use it.

By the way, I found this about loanwords from German in English.

Nnnnoo, not at all. Seriously the only German word I recognise is schadenfreude, and there may on occasion be a word to which I can say "Hey, that sounds kind of like this other word in English! Maybe they mean something similar!", but I doubt I could place those words as German.... Oh, I also know ja means yes. I can rarely remember what no is, though, so if anybody ever tries to sell me something in Germany I'm screwed. Unless no is 'nein', but I could swear that was Swiss.

... I know less about countries outside my own than the stereotypical American! How is it possible to be worse than a stereotype?! :gonk:
And come to think of it, I failed the citizenship test for my own country, too (I did it in school one time, when we were shown how difficult it is to become a citizen), so I apparently know nothing about any countries. Hooray for citizenship by birth, or I'd be kicked off of Earth! :P

Nein is no, it is just that the Swizz and Austrian (not Australian) language are close to the southern german accent, sharing some of the core words. Also both countries have a long history of being part of germany or pre-german countries like holy roman empire of german nations (~ 1000-1200), Burgund (~900 and ~1400 again), Habsburg (since ~1300).

http://www.euratlas.net/history/europe/ ... index.html

So you see the borders moved a lot in our region in the last 2000 years, and many regions have been part of many different ethnical groups. Parts of france was german and the other way around, austria started as a german noble house, same for the swizz. Around 800 there was even one country covering most of france and germany. This is why many things are shared between some countries today. You also see on that map that the border between spain and france has also moved a lot and not been clear as today for a long time after the roman empire collapsed.

A lot of border and groups movement.

@Dlover: At least you got tests, nothing like that in germany. Maybe cause we are still too afraid to show patriotism in any kind except sports, cause it might be interpreted wrong.

The tests are utter bull. One of the questions was "What is an akubra?" The F*** is an akubra?

That sounds really damn creepy. Like you're trying to work out where I am and just eliminated about a quarter of the world. If you are creeping on me, you should probably be aware that you'll find a sword in your back, a dog on either leg, a cat in your face and a large chunk of sharp wood in your mouth. :halo:

El akubra capra. ;)

Seriously, I watched so many cowboy movies and had to google it. Seems like it is a company name, since it is a registered name. Seems rather like product placement than a proper test.

An akubra is a hat. The kind that is generally shown as having corks hanging from the brim. I too used the power of Google, but I am experienced in searching it for bullshit.

... Wasn't Cleopatra supposedly a near genius militaristic mind, and the one who beat Caesar by manipulating his affections for her? I really don't think any sane person would think a cat could earn that sort of claim, even in ancient Egypt.
