It was the right conjugation for me. Deteriorates: causes deterioration or atrophy. It's the same construction as, say, "smoking kills."
I realize it's a difficult word to start with, but I thought it was workable. You have to shuffle the parts of speech around a bit, but you can do that in poetry. Been done in this thread before.

(That's off the top of my head. Could probably do better.)
I thought it was worth the price to have a three word haiku.
