Dlover wrote: Mon Aug 10, 2020 7:28 am Fighting trolls without an attack mage (wizard/sorcerer/maybe-warlock-I-dunno) = probable death. You've got to have lit torches ready (thankfully we did) and have the action economy for someone to be doing that 1 damage to prevent regen. And unfortunately D&D doesn't really allow for running away once you're in melee.

I'd initially thought I might be able to help some with fire, but turns out Sacred Flame is more sacred than flame (does Radiant damage).
I’m sorry it’s all my fault. :/

Well, I think we are gonna have a rescue mission now... :)

Which will delay our meeting back up with Joe and our new/not so new anymore, character.

Nah Burns, that's not what I'm saying. Just that fighting trolls without a caster is pretty deadly.

I've run a few troll encounters and this is the only one that was challenging. It is also why there were four trolls, in a previous encounter three players easily destroyed an equal number of trolls (one full and two smaller) - without a caster but with a single magical fire weapon.

That said both Kroshav and Lurn get inspiration for playing true to their characters and not metagaming!

There was no metagaming I could even have done in this case, I had no fire options. And I feel like that magical fire weapon had much more of an impact than you thought. XD

And nah, Burns, it was how Joe would act, and it wasn't as though splitting away was catastrophic until I just happened to be too good at charming trolls. Actually, I don't even know if Joe has any fire spells, I just refer to casters since I don't know how other classes get fire without extremely rare weaponry.

I meant in the sense of your interaction with the trolls before the fight Dlover. During the fight Lurn had some crap luck.

Fair enough. It's easy to stick to his character considering he and I both want to negotiate when possible. XD

Also, somebody remind me to prepare Bestow Curse and Spirit Guardians if Lurn's still alive and I forget it next long rest. A bit situational when I only have two 3rd level spell slots, but good spells that I've overlooked before. I mean, having "One target has to make a wisdom save to take their turn" and "Big constant AoE 3d8 damage with only a save to reduce damage" both sound very, very nice. (Spirit Guardians also allows any number of ignored targets, so no friendly fire).

Yeah, SG also gives the NPCs a place to retreat to. Kroshav considers it a success that he managed to Sanctuary one of them to keep them alive. Especially since that's the soldier that managed to stabilize him to keep him from bleeding out. Will need to ask their names after all this. :)

Or it could, rather than being to place to retreat to, be a delay to retreat from, since it halves enemy movement, so they can't give chase to fleeing people.

Joe has firebolt and dragon’s breath which she could cast as fire.

Oh! Kroshav has fire dragon breath!

Yeah, I used it on the big troll, but it's a one time thing, and it means he's not smiting if he's breathing.

Okay...quick check...Joe was casting detect magic on the woman and baby...right? Or was there some other step I missed...

Sorry for this but I'm having 12 hour days because of end of financial year shenanigans...I'm actually in a 'meeting' right now...:p

Joe decided to check on the woman because wheb she was casting detect magic, the woman was gone when Joe was finished. Joe wanted to see of there was magic in her blood like the victim, which it is.

It is also possible someone is targetting those with magic blood, so we need to keep watch just in case.

Is the ion stone pinging?

I am guessing what Joe is up against is a night hag, which has resistance to fire and ice and Ruby’s ice breath was not as affective as it should have been.

Night hag has LOTS of hp, and is at least cr 5 (basic rules), which Joe (level 4) is trying to solo. Ruby washeradvantage in this fight and now he’s gone and all spels used, Joe doesn’t have much. Hopefully the hags MM isn’t at will or Joe will be screwed. In melee though, Joe at least has mage armour on to help a bit...

But it’s okay if it doesn’t end with Joe winning, I fogured the woman would been too much, lycanthrope or not.

Nope, you can give it now. If Jaq does something that would fundamentally change the obstacle you'll get a chance to revise it.

Just to share my thoughts on what Kroshav would be thinking of doing...

• Joe's got a hag problem, he's down to investigate that, especially with an innocent kid in the mix.
• He still feels that he ought to have done more for Tom and Cassie in trying to figure out what happened to Grey, and Ves is 'missing' (though I'm expecting she's been written out of things until Thinks is back), so he's strongly leaning towards escorting the two of them back to their farm, and trying to figure out what happened to Grey and Ves.
- I don't think that the rest of the NPCs want to back-track a week, however, so that might mean parting ways with them.
- Continuing onward and leaving Tom and Cassie to find their own way back would keep the band together, but I'm not sure that Kroshav has a big draw to do so, other than to accompany the NPCs.

What are the rest of you thinking?

I will just chime in on that list,

-Ves is out until Thinks makes it back, I saw she was online a couple days ago, so maybe?
-Tom and Cassie wouldn't be heading east completely on their own, they'd be accompanied by a fair number of others heading east (Kroshav would know that based on the traffic they'd passed heading west).

With that additional information decide as you see fit!

Though it would be nice if I don't have to run four separate games for you all :D.

Lurn's inclined to help deal with the hag problem too; it's killing people, so it's his divine, uh... I forget the word. Not right, but where you have to do the thing because it's expected of you. Whatever, his god says prevent death, so he'll be strongly inclined to do that.

After that, Lurn's fine with anything. He wants to support Tom, but doesn't think of himself as a tracker, even if he apparently has +8 to survival.

There's also that the thieves' guild in that one city wanted us to stay close for the event that they can deal with that sketchy lord, but Lurn's probably forgotten about that by now and it's doubtful they can get a messenger to find us.

Was the thieves' guild in the starting city, before Kroshav joined?
