Re: The gladiators!

Post by WearsHats » Fri Aug 11, 2017 7:26 pm

The thing is that I was approaching this with a certain RP mindset. We're starting from scratch with disposable characters who have effectively no background beyond slaves in a gladiator pit and no class or levels at all. With a stat rolling system that assigns stats in order. So I was going to just say "Okay. That's you. That's how you were born. Let everything about your life from here be dictated by what happens to you. I'm not going to force you into any path." So, in that sense, swapping stats seems a little wrong. The rules let me. But it's against the spirit of the experiment.

Except that, yeah, swapping would open up a bunch of options and paths. Not to mention that I can't even remember when I actually had a regular night's sleep. And this game isn't really set up for heavy RPing. So maybe I should just chuck that. I'm kind of tempted to swap WIS and STR and make him a big (but surprisingly nimble) dragonborn tank. Less thinking and talking, more smashing.

That would make for an excellent future barbarian or fighter.

Exactly. Not my usual role. But it could be fun for a change. And it suits the game well. What the hey. Let's do that.

Race: Dragonborn (+2 STR, +1 CHA)
Color: Red (Fire breath, 15 foot cone)

STR: 20
DEX: 17
CON: 16
INT: 10
WIS: 13
CHA: 14

Background seems irrelevant. He's had everything stripped from him and is just another slave in the gladiator pits. Is there a mechanical need to pick? Anything else I need to fill in? Other than a name?

If you pick a background, you get proficiency in 2 skills so it's probably worth it.

Background gives you some skill proficiencies that will potentially be useful later. There is a Gladiator variant to the Entertainer background that flavors your skill at performing being less to do with musical instruments and the like, and more about being able to read a crowd and put on a good show in the fighting arena. Acrobatics and Performance would be the skills you get from it.

Good point. Looking through the ones in the PHB, gladiator does look good. I was thinking he was basically raised in and around the pits, perhaps from a stolen egg. Soldier could work, too, but gladiator seems more fitting. We're not going with subtlety here.

Hmm... Seems interesting.

_: 5D6.HIGH(3) = [3, 2, 3, 6, 1] = 12
5D6.HIGH(3) = [4, 1, 1, 3, 3] = 10
5D6.HIGH(3) = [5, 5, 3, 1, 5] = 15
5D6.HIGH(3) = [1, 2, 1, 4, 6] = 12
5D6.HIGH(3) = [1, 5, 1, 3, 5] = 13
5D6.HIGH(3) = [4, 5, 2, 2, 1] = 11

_: 4D6.HIGH(3) = [1, 5, 1, 5] = 11
4D6.HIGH(3) = [2, 5, 4, 3] = 12
4D6.HIGH(3) = [5, 3, 6, 1] = 14
4D6.HIGH(3) = [2, 6, 4, 6] = 16
4D6.HIGH(3) = [5, 3, 5, 4] = 14
4D6.HIGH(3) = [4, 1, 6, 6] = 16
4D6.HIGH(3) = [4, 6, 4, 2] = 14

Oh wow with the stats of the later one... I can be anything I want to be! ....Problem is...I have no idea what.
Base stats:
STR: 14
DEX: 16
CON: 16
INT: 12
WIS: 14
CHA: 14

Hmmm...I think.... Lightfoot Halfling with Criminal background for stealth and deception. Thinking possibly Rogue with barbarian splash
STR: 14
DEX: 18
CON: 16
INT: 12
WIS: 14
CHA: 15

Good to see another victim player join!

I intend to start in a week or two when I get back to an actual computer I can use and make a map and maybe a spreadsheet for the first fight..

I think I've got all that's needed from you for now but after the first fight it would be nice know all of the following
Name
Gender
Race
First level class

Gender is mostly to know who need 12 ac leather rags and who are forced to wear 12 ac chainmail bikinis and if they can open up the mudhoney wrestling pits again after the last horrible drowning accident killing most of the elligible participants.

If anyone is allowed to be jealous, it's a specific character who's probably only going to have 5 INT.

Considering naming myself "Thog"... For no particular reason. :shifty:

Haha, nah we all got to roll the same way :) I just mean that 5d6 is giving us all better stats than you'd get on average than the standard array or 4d6.

The exception is m0rt's 5 INT, but the rest of our stats are pretty damn good across the board.

I got better rolls from 4d6 than 5d6 so it's not always the case.

Is Thog barbarian?

Well who doesn't love Thog :) knucklekraken's orc Roy was similar too (from that writing competition you guys did on the old forum several years ago).

Okay, finally being back to a computer allows me to finish my beast out.

Repeating from above.
These stats
_: 5D6.HIGH(3) = [6, 6, 4, 3, 3] = 16
5D6.HIGH(3) = [3, 4, 1, 6, 6] = 16
5D6.HIGH(3) = [6, 3, 5, 3, 6] = 17
5D6.HIGH(3) = [5, 6, 5, 2, 5] = 16
5D6.HIGH(3) = [4, 1, 5, 5, 3] = 14
5D6.HIGwH(3) = [5, 1, 2, 6, 4] = 15

Switching the 17 and 15 (Charisma & Con)

Name: Martin the Mad
Gender: male
Race: Elf (Drow)
Class: warlock (
Background: sage

Final Stats:
STR: 16 (+3)
DEX: 18 (+4)
CON: 15 (+2)
INT: 16 (+3)
WIS: 14 (+2)
CHA: 18 (+4)

whoops, thanks...nearly forgot about that one.

Though, do note dear GM, that regardless of my awesome stats, I basically gave myself a permanent disadvantage on all attacks due to sun sensitivity.
this poor soul (Evil as he is) must have been dredged up out of the netherworld, though it is up to you whether the sun sensitivity is happening or not.
