The majority of the basement is a typical cellar with store foodstuffs, but there is a metal door on the far end, with a large lock above the handle.

Nem's curiosity is piqued.

Downstairs it is, and she's going to try the fancy lock on the intriguing door.

Goddamn... Thieves tools is my new investigation

You fiddle with it for a good five minutes, and are no further along than when you started!

You fiddle with the lock for another fifteen minutes, making very little headway. It's certainly a more complicated lock than you've had to deal with recently.

((Crushed it!))

You hear a shuffling footstep... a faint click... more shuffling footsteps, and a flickering light under the door at the top of the stairs leading down to the basement. It would seem Pembleton is rummaging around in the kitchen for a late night something.

Nem looks around for a dark corner and casts a Minor Illusion for her and Ily to hide behind, to look like the wall. Crouching down, she moves behind it and waits for the light to go out.

Ulmwin calls out in a mocking tone

"There once was a squid man from a portal,
who liked to grab folks and chortle!
He tried to snag a mage,
but the dwarf went into a rage!
Oh, well, turns out the squid man was mortal!"

Squid-hands flinches and looks around uncertainly.

A tentacle armed fellow leaps through the portal at Anders, who meets it with two swings of his longsword.
It also draws a pair of shots from the two crossbowmen on overwatch, one of which hits.
The creature lashes out with its fists and tentacles, grabbing tight to one of the guards and squeezing.
True to Ulmwin's prediction about its mortality, Dornikal puts an end to squid-hand, lopping through it with a swing of his blade.

Holger vomits purple sparkles from between his gums, that swirl about the area, latching onto him, Dornikal, Randy, Anders, and the injured guards, restoring some of their health at the expense of Holger's. The crackling purple energy swirling around him dissipates like warm breath on a cold day.

The portal shrinks dramatically.

Holger ponders the phenomenon...
► Show Spoiler
Two large pincers thrust through the portal, but the guard they dart after is able to fend both attempts off with his shield.

Coljin and his squad of guards move him along the south edge of the platform, illuminating a bit more of the tubes. Strewn about the ground is the detritus and baubles that seem to have been placed with some intent in front of the central tube. There are shallow steps leading up to the tubes not too far away, so Junara will be able to put you down soon.

The guard who just fended off both attacks of the pincers gamely steps up in front of the portal, holding his shield at the ready and blocking the entrance.

Randy ponders how they are going to close the portal, and comes to the conclusion that while he may have received a charge from a higher being to deal with this sort of spoon, they sure as fork weren't too helpful with telling him HOW to deal with it. Other than it being affected by Holger's random chaos and your own planar infused strikes on the enemies, you don't glean anything further.

Tess and Ily hide in a corner, and after another ten or fifteen minutes, the illusory crate flickering a few times as you have to recast it, you hear some splashing and clanking before the light retreats, and you hear footsteps heading back upstairs.

Nem waits another few minutes to be sure the guy is asleep and gives that lock one more try. She's pretty sure she's almost getting it...

Thieves tools (Dex + prof): 1D20+4 = [4]+4 = 8

But whatever its hiding, she isn't going to find out tonight.

With a sigh, she creeps back upstairs to leave the way she came in.

Randy looks around. "There's got to be something anchoring the portal. They're too unstable to last long otherwise. Look around and see if there's anything close to the forking thing. They sure seem anxious to recapture it otherwise."

Perception: 1d20+3 = [9] = 12

"Maybe it's under water near the thing?"

Yeah... that lock isn't budging, you think you almost have it, then your picks slip free and it's back to the start again.

When you get upstairs, you notice newly cleaned dishes sitting by the basin in the kitchen, and that the window you entered through has been latched.

((That'll be Randy's turn when it comes around again.))

Coljin just waits until he is carried over to where he can be put down by Junara. "Let's look around over there and see if something there is causing that portal to stay open." he states to his accompanying guards.

((I guess climbing out the window means she's fairly likely to knock the dishes if she doesn't move them? Or is the window somewhere away from the sink?))

((Oh thank god for that! I thought I was going to have to try picking the lock again...))

Nem unlatches the window and hops carefully back outside with Ily going ahead, pausing to take a quick survey of the neighbourhood as they go (is anyone around who might spot her or is all quiet?), then relatch the window as she exits.

((They're amazing at this))
Perceptions: 1D20+4 = [4]+4 = 8
1D20+3 = [5]+3 = 8

lock the window: 1D20+4 = [17]+4 = 21

Cool. Remember that little secret nook she found to hide in when we all scattered out of the main square on our first day in town? She's going to go there, park herself down and read the file on the Serenity mages.

Sneaking, because guards and stuff are presumably around:

Stealth: 2D20.HIGH(1) + 4 = [17, 8]+4 = 21

((Made the roll at adv in case Ily can help scout a bit, but he's apparently not really that focused anyway...))

You make your way back to the little alcove under the building, silently slithering up the drain chute. As you near the ledge to the area above, you hear breathing.

Offering a silent curse, Nem stops dead and listens.

Is the breathing relaxed like someone's sleeping there?

A pair of young street kids, neither one the girl you spoke to, but the boy looks familiar, perhaps the kid down the other alley?
