Re: D&D 5e forum campaign - RECRUITMENT CLOSED

Post by BadgeAddict » Thu Jul 21, 2016 8:34 am

I'm just trying to think about what character I want to make, perhaps one I've used before in RL dnd games.

Like that murderous Bard I had, who tortured people...they were bad people, but the DM made me change my alignment from chaotic to evil.
Then that grippli druid who cared more about the forest than his party, he was quite powerful, but the other members of the group picked on him all the time, mostly my kicking him or treating him like a dog...he eventually left the party.
I played a paladin once, who was a zealous pusher of his religion, to the point of running around and encouraging people to take up the cause of his deity....he fell into a hole that he couldn't jump over...very sad.

Then I have characters like Sam in SCH, who is a crazy small person...but, we're all kind of crazy..

So yeah, I'm just trying to formulate in my mind what I want as far as a backstory goes...

But if paladins don't have to be lawful good anymore, than that makes that class a lot more appealing.

EDIT: By the way, I think it would be kind of hilarious if we all picked the same race. other than human.. (Like all tieflings, or all dragonborn) <-- talk about breaking the game before it even starts.

You choose an oath at l3 that is roughly one of the traditional lawful good, a druid-type, and one who believes in vengeance and smiting. Its a lot more flexible than it used to be for sure :)

What, but don't you want a Jasper 2.0..?

I mean... Not that Jasper is in any way evil. :shifty:

Seriously though, while I'm not intending to play an evil character, it's totally possible to have an evil character and still fall in line with the group. Common interest, Safety in numbers, convenient distractions if you have to make a quick getaway... Many methods to go about being an evil character and still (mostly) get around with the party. If done well, it can even make for a more interesting group dynamic.

You're the gm though, of course. If you say no evil chars, no evil chars. Not like I was intent on specifically picking one anyways.

I guess of rather not evil for the sake of evil, and rather not evil at the expense of the group... if you think you can work it , I'm open to discussion.

Don't suppose you fancy posting the list of character combinations publicly spider (with the proviso that we all respect the choice-queue)? Or would you prefer that we don't know who else is playing what when we start?

... I may be a little overexcited about this game...

I don't like "evil for the sake of being evil" either. There's no need to kick the dog. It's just that the evil character is the one who offers the more dubious moral choices. You need this item, but the guy doesn't want to give it until you complete some quest? Why not steal it instead? This guy knows the location of the hidden base, but is refusing to speak? Why not MAKE him speak? You need to cook these steaks? Why not burn down the tavern to get some fire?

Okay, I guess the last option is "evil for the sake of being evil"...

There's an "evil paladin" (oathbreaker variant) in the dmg but it's intended as a template for a campaign boss and so is generally considered overpowered for a pc. You generally need dm permission to use it or even intentionally aim for it as a pc because it's potentially game-breaking.

Well, I guess you'd better hope that's one of the options you can choose from then :)

No, I mean you don't get to choose your own pc from scratch. Spider's premade 32 pcs for us to choose from, so fighter/dragonborn/soldier might not be an option at all :)

From memory, cha is the/a primary state for sorcerers, paladins and bards...

Cha is core for pallys in 5th? :o None of them are those classes but one of the backgrounds seems to be more cha based.

Backgrounds only affect your skill proficiencies, so it's not dependent on your ability scores in any way except flavour.

Oh - warlocks are also cha-based

But some skills are more cha based than others.... But ifno real effect than proficencies, what proficencies does hermit and entertainer have?

You'd have to Google it for now I'm afraid. I can look up the PHB when I get home, but I'll not be back for about 3 hours...

I think proficiencies are for things like knowledge checks, or your ability to disguise yourself, or play an instrument. My understanding is that they're largely non-combat skills but I could be wrong...

Ummm... Alignment: I guess I'll go my traditional. Neutral Good with some tendency towards lawful. Generally follows the rules, but isn't afraid to get his hands dirty if need be (or if he thinks it might be good for a practical joke).

Had to wait until I got home. Something that got/said or done triggered the firewall at work again. >:? That probably means I'll be making my postings later in the day.

In terms of what level to start with, I'm open. :) I don't try to get overly attached to low levels. Getting squished in new and interesting ways is all part of the fun! (like the time our spell caster let loose with an amplified fireball spell without first checking the radius of said spell :chuckle: )
