Re: Hunters of Letrua

"Really? I could borrow some books? Oh, that would be wonderful!", she exclaims excitedly. "Thank you Tor, that sounds fascinating... most of the books on enchantments I've been able to track down only were able to talk about them in the abstract, I'd love to learn more about how they function... and... find out if it's something I might be able to do...", admitting doubt in her abilities seems a bit difficult for her.

"At the least, an understanding of the meaning of enchantment runes seems like it would be quite useful in identifying things, even if I'm not ever able to apply them myself."

"The felid is roughly three quarters of your height, at its shoulder, is twice as long as you are tall, and can turn a full three hundred and sixty degrees in one and a half seconds. The tail is flexible and is capable of moving in a two hundred and seventy degree arc behind it, though the felid's maneuverability means it can twist to put you in that arc fairly easily if you are standing in front of it. The only person I have known to successfully stay completely out of the tail's reach is Allisandra, though she did that by climbing atop its tail and balancing where it could not bend to reach her. As for protection from the venom, it is difficult to achieve. I know how to apply an effect which neutralises the venom, but to have an object which would actively do so... The only way I can think to achieve that would be to use a blade enchanted with the effect and stab yourself with it, but I specialise in temporary enchantments and identification. Marie may know of a way to make such a thing possible."

"Oh... well, I begin to see why I'm to have a partner in this...", she remarks with a bit of a frown. "I may have to ask Marie once I have a better understanding... would the neutralizing enchantment have to be introduced to the user's blood to have an effect? Perhaps rather than repeated stabbing with a blade, a thin bit of enchanted metal that could be pierced through the flesh...? Ah, but I don't yet know enough to do more than speculate... I'll have to take you up on your offer of borrowing books and round out my education long before I get any big ideas.", she remarks with a wry grin.

"A few more questions about the felid I'm to face, if I may? You said that the flesh is not that tough as it hunts with stealth, does that apply to the tail as well? Might the tail be possibly severed from the body? Is the tail tipped with a stinger, or how is the venom applied? Is the felid proof against its own venom? Can the venom be harvested from the creature?"

"If you were not pulled to the side as you came through, Marie does not believe you currently capable of learning to create your own enchantments. Don't be disheartened, though, I didn't initially either. You just need to build up a resilience to the corruption of magic, same as the body learns to fight disease. The fast track to that is to ingest corrupted materials and have your body fight it off repeatedly, which is painful and wearying. Close contact with beasts and especially so demons will more gradually build your resistance as well. The fast track would take several weeks of constant suffering to build up the very basic resilience needed to start learning, and at that point you must sharpen your mind. The slower method can take two to six months. That only guarantees your body is capable, mind you. Your mindframe would be a different matter."

"A thin skewer would probably cause less bleeding, yes. And once it comes into contact with the blood it should spread the effect. Carving the rune onto such a small surface would be rather challenging, though. Perhaps if there were a larger side which narrowed out to a skewer..."

"The tip of the tail has a carapace which comes to a point, but the rest can be cut. If you land a solid enough blow you may be able to sever it. It does have an immunity to its own venom, else it would probably have to be rather picky with eating, and the venom can be harvested, with some difficulty. The felid must be entirely restrained, to ensure it cannot strike anybody, then enticed into secreting its venom. Once that is done we can press a container with a membrane cover against the tip to simulate the piercing of prey, so it will release the venom into the container. Unfortunately, we have found little use for the venom beyond applying it to weapons."

"Really?! You'll have to show me how you do that! I work better up close to the creatures than at a distance, but I'm not too bad with a bow. Not half as good as Sammy - he's my little brother - but I'm not horrible. I'd love to be able to show him some REAL shooting though some day!

Anyway, I guess I'd better get this test done huh? Any last minute tips for me?"

Olly keeps talking to hide his nerves over the imminent test until he decides that he'd probably better just go and get it over with.

"Well, wish me luck! See you when I come out!"

After hearing any last-minute advice from the girl, Olly checks his leather armour one last time, adjusts his grip on his weapons, rolls his shoulders and steps into the demon-room.

Julius nods, but he cannot help himself by being cleaver. He knows she means light as in wieght, but instead he thinks of light as in bright and focuses on making the sword lighter in that way. Then shortly afterwards he tries to makes t lighter as the wieght, cant be too much of a smart ass after all.

"Hmm, well I already entertain for money, so I know how to play to the crowd. Hey Gaul, given we're friends and all now, you wanna do me a favor? Can you talk to Marie, and see that she alters the contract so that any prize money goes to me? I have no idea as to the wording of it, but I'd bet my right ear Harada is getting some profit as well as trying to get rid of me!"

Once Gaul has finished adjusting her leathers, Risu tests her mobility with some handstands, flip-flops, a nimble climb onto the table and then a somersault off it. She picks up one of the metal plates, and feeling its weight, opts to put it back. She selects a wrist-mounted crossbow from the wall, and 10 small bolts for her pouch, as well as a metal war fan for deflection of projectiles before hiding these on her person and spinning back to face Gaul.

"No more armor for me thanks, and I have my weaponry. What else do gladiators do?"

"Really?! You'll have to show me how you do that! I work better up close to the creatures than at a distance, but I'm not too bad with a bow. Not half as good as Sammy - he's my little brother - but I'm not horrible. I'd love to be able to show him some REAL shooting though some day!"
"A lot of practice. You improve far faster when you're in danger. It's mostly about being able to assess the distance and decide when to let go and how to flick your wrist..

"Anyway, I guess I'd better get this test done huh? Any last minute tips for me?"
"At this stage? Hit it hard and don't die. You don't have to worry about the second part, though. Just put on a good show and let me see your skill."

"Well, wish me luck! See you when I come out!"
"Oh, I'll be in there with you, just in case things go wrong. And if you need luck then it's really for the best that I'm there. Focus on being good instead, that I can help you with if you prove you're worth it. Now, let's go." Allisandra guides Ollrith to a heavy metal door in the back of the room, pushing it open and gesturing for him to go through. As he does, he finds himself in a large circular room with no ceiling, opposite a portcullis, but with mesh across the gaps in the frame, presumably to keep smaller creatures from slipping through. Shutting the door behind them, Allisandra raises one hand and makes several signs with her fingers, and a few moments later the portcullis starts sliding upwards, opening the way for Olly's test opponent. A quadrupedal animal, with long thin legs, no tail, and barely any neck, its shoulders reaching half way up the Olly's thighs, lopes out, an absurdly long tongue drooping from its maw. This would be the carionite. The creature looks about the arena quickly, assessing its surroundings, then sets its dark eyes on Olly and Allisandra on the far side. Releasing an unnatural, awkward, "horlck" of a sound, it charges the pair, saliva dripping dripping from its mouth. Allisandra giggles and gives a gentle push to Olly, "You're up."

Julius
As Julius fails to resist his childish urges the sword takes on a pale glow which sputters out soon after he changes his focus to the true goal, and the sword lifts upward in the gentle grip of the woman, who sighs, "I suppose some people just can't help it. You're the kind who is difficult to teach, but thankfully it seems like I don't have to do any more of that... Allie will like you, I think. She can never be serious about anything... Now, even though you have a talent for enchantment, you will need to take a combat trial. Your talent just means we will expect more of you. First things first, I want you to use ink to place a rune in each square on the armour and on the centre of four of the metal plates, which will work together to ensure the plates stick to the armour. Take my earlier example and try to follow that as a lead." Sure enough, the plate which she had used as an example earlier still clung to the surface of the leather, showing no sign of having moved from where she had placed it.

Risu
"Hmm, well I already entertain for money, so I know how to play to the crowd. Hey Gaul, given we're friends and all now, you wanna do me a favor? Can you talk to Marie, and see that she alters the contract so that any prize money goes to me? I have no idea as to the wording of it, but I'd bet my right ear Harada is getting some profit as well as trying to get rid of me!"
"Sure, I can do that! Tor will be happy to do that for you, too. Giving money to people who aren't helping us isn't useful to him."

Gaul applauds as Risu tests her mobility, "You're very agile! It will be easy for you to entertain the audiences. You could probably even climb Monty!"

"No more armor for me thanks, and I have my weaponry. What else do gladiators do?"
"Well, besides fighting, we sometimes get chosen to go out into the wilds, to look for special plants, or catch more demons for the arena, and sometimes to try to improve our maps. Oh! And we help test enchantments! Lar and I, we were the ones who tested the sharpness enchantment for the swords given to the perimeter guards last year. They got a new enchanter for that batch and wanted to make sure his enchantments could cut demons properly. We don't just test fighting enchantments, though, Allisandra tried a backpack which was meant to make her fly! It... Didn't work... She wasn't happy about that."

"Sorry, sorry. Okay so you just want me to bind them together? Alright." He focuses upon the effect to bind things together and makes a rune which has two strings intertwined with eachother to symbolize binding and applies it to the armour.

"I do have some questions, if I can use enchantments out there, what is the field made out of? Sand? I was thinking of perhaps making a barrier of some sort to protect me or others inside said barrier from threats, but I am unsure if it would work as a permanent spell, or even a temporary one. I was thinking of putting a barrier up and then using a bow or something similar to hurt demons from away from the barrier."

"The ground is stone with a covering of sand. As for this barrier of yours... Well, there are known runes which repel demons, but the sort of energy it takes to do that is immense, even for a small area. Given time you could create such an effect, but it would probably take days for somebody at your level to pour enough energy into a rune barely large enough for you to stand in."

Korga does seem a bit disheartened, but her jaw soon clenches in determination. "Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, Tor. The fast track sounds like it would interfere with my progression in other areas, but I'll not give up until I've tried my utmost to master it. If there a limit to what can be enchanted? Forgive my lack of understanding on the subject, but can enchantments be placed on the flesh itself?

I've read of some creatures that use venom to kill their prey, but the venom is rendered inert in the process of killing the prey, and others that can ingest it freely, but were they stick by another of their kind, they would be affected. Is it known if the felid is proof against its own sting?

There are some toxins that can have therapeutic uses when diluted low enough, or combined with other substances... What are the exact symptomsof felid venom?"

After a lifetime of asking questions that people couldn't answer, and then learning herself more than was known by anyone else in her community, finding someone more knowledgeable than her, AND is willing to answer her questions, Korga is winging everything she can out of him. At this point, she's rather forgot that she has to FIGHT this thing, her interest is piqued by trying to understand enchantments and the natural history of felids. Her tone is less of an authoritative one when discussing what she's read, and more of a musing out loud and repeating intonation that Tor may already know, rather than presuming she's teaching him something new.

OOC: I am more than happy to let you handle the combat stats dlover :)

Watching the creature appear in front of him, Olly feels his nerves disappear and he drops into his familiar fighting stance. Now, there is only him and the demon, and the demon is charging.

Olly lets the creature make its charge, before leaping sideways at the last minute. He rolls nimbly out of its way and tumbles back to his feet, spinning quickly to face it as he raises his fists. He adjusts his weight, ready to make his move. He waits for the carionite to make an attack, then ducks backwards to avoid the strike which he expects will come from that flailing tongue... Catching his weight on his hand, he aims a sweeping low kick at the creature's legs, knocking it to the ground, which is when he makes his counter attack, striking quickly with his fists while it's on the floor.

Or at least, that's the plan...

Julius
"And what is exactly a Caironate?"
"A four-legged beast which drinks blood from its prey even while fighting. They normally work in packs, so going against a single one shouldn't be too dangerous. This way." Leading Julius to a heavy door in the back of the room, she turns to face him, "You are ready?"

Korga
"Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, Tor. The fast track sounds like it would interfere with my progression in other areas, but I'll not give up until I've tried my utmost to master it. If there a limit to what can be enchanted? Forgive my lack of understanding on the subject, but can enchantments be placed on the flesh itself?"
"Anything an enchanter can locate can be enchanted. Permanently enchanting a liquids or the air is impossible, though, since the runes dissipate, but anything solid is an acceptable target. As for enchanting the flesh, it's entirely possible. Some enchanters get involved in fights by directly boosting the agility or strength of their partners, and since rune-free enchantments dissolve so quickly it doesn't seem to have any negative effects."

"I've read of some creatures that use venom to kill their prey, but the venom is rendered inert in the process of killing the prey, and others that can ingest it freely, but were they stick by another of their kind, they would be affected. Is it known if the felid is proof against its own sting?"
"Well in that case we're just not sure. We've never seen them attack each other, and the fighters who could try getting them to sting themselves generally kill them too fast. We've not really done any studies on it, since there hasn't been anybody curious enough to hire us to do so."

"There are some toxins that can have therapeutic uses when diluted low enough, or combined with other substances... What are the exact symptomsof felid venom?"
"At first there are none, then a moment later your muscles start burning, your tongue swells to uncomfortable levels, you lose feeling in your fingers and toes, you start to get dizzy, and a bit later you just drop dead. It all happens pretty quickly, too. On a healthy person it takes roughly two to four minutes to kill. But from what we can tell that depends on the victim being desperate to fight off the felid, the venom doesn't do much unless you move around and help it spread around your system, like it depends on muscle activity to make it work. If you get stung and just sit back and rest it'll just affect the local area, and your body will be able to fight it off pretty quickly... Or maybe it's not that the body fights it, and rather that it becomes inert while trying to kill you, like you suggested. It's something to consider, but working out the difference would take time to prepare for... Marie would have to investigate an enchantment to let her study the venom like she does magic, then there would be a whole process to determining what it is like before injection, after, and how it behaves in the body, maybe even what it's like after symptoms stop showing. Complicated, but potentially something to think about."

Risu
"You don't have to worry about beating him. Nobody can. Just don't get stepped on while I try to go talk to Marie, okay? Show off how well you can move by climbing on him, if you like. People really only come to see him when they don't want to see much violence." Gaul hurries to the back of the room and pushes against the door until it slides open just wide enough to slip through, "He's just through here."

"Rune free enchantments don't have negative effects on living things... but runed enchantments would? Or would it be possible to inscribe a rune of venom resistance directly on the skin? Or in combat, could an attack be used to inscribe a simple rune that would weaken the foe? How quickly can the body fight off the venom if one were to remain inactive? Quickly enough to make a difference in a fight, or a matter of minutes? I hope NOT to get stung, but in the event that I do, I'd like to know what to expect..."

"I hope so...." As soon as he is ushered to the arena he uses the knife to pinprick his finger and concentrates on binding effect for the bolas and makes the twisted symbol on one of the bolas' balls. It will be weak without the counterpart, however once it gets tangled it would be easy to apply the other counterpart. He looks at the beast to try to determine if it is a noucternal beast or dayternal.

Ollrith
Olly takes an evasive approach to the fight, successfully diving out of the way of the beast's first attack, its teeth snapping at the air where his leg had been. As anticipated, the tongue whips towards him as he regains his balance, but it seems he misjudged its target, as the tongue wraps around his calf, spines springing from it to tear into his leg even as Olly brings his foot around to sweep the carionite to the ground. As it falls the tongue retracts, the spines tearing away with a mild amount of pain, and the creature snaps at the extended foot, but fails to connect. Ignoring the insignificant pain in his leg, Olly begins pounding the carionite the moment it hits the ground, giving it no chance to evade his blows. He manages to land six blows against the creature before it can get its legs beneath itself, his bladed caestuses (... Caesti?) savagely rending its flesh. Despite its injuries, the moment the carionite is on its feet is leaps backward, just beyond the reach of Olly's fists.

Ollrith HP: 94%
Carionite HP: 77%

Risu
As Risu slips into the arena, her guard up, she finds herself facing... A rock formation? There looks to be a large pile of rocks in the centre of the arena, with no sign of anything else, but before she can move further than the doorway an eye opens on a large boulder, revealing it to actually be a large, beaked head, almost five times her height in its own height and width, and as the head moves she can see it is supported by a sinuous neck, initially hidden within a series of stony plates. The creature looks looks at Risu and sniffs, its breath uncomfortably hot on her skin, before noticing Gaul behind her and promptly begins turning away, at which point she realises that four oddly shaped rocks are actually legs, almost as round as a grown adult's height. Stretching its head upward and taking two enormous, ponderous steps towards the edge of the arena, the creature takes hold of a tree rising over the walls and strips half the branches from it, chewing on them contently as it pulls its head back into the arena. "This is Monty! He won't try to hurt you unless he thinks you're really scary, but nothing scares him since he got this big. I bet you know why you have to be careful around his legs, though. He's so big that he can't see everything around him, so he might accidentally kick you."

Korga
"A rune would keep drawing magic to sustain the enchantment. On a human that would take a few minutes to make them sick and a couple hours to guarantee death. On a beast it would probably take a couple of days before they started showing signs of illness. And on a fully fledged demon, well, we've never seen pure magical energy to anything to them except make them bigger and meaner, though the enchantment's effect would still be applied. I'm hoping I can trust you not to tell anybody about any of that. Not sure why, but the guys who fund studies of magic don't want the public to know our own methods are so dangerous. If anybody under my employ let that slip they'd stop hiring us.
As for fighting off the venom... That can actually vary. Some people, if they don't struggle enough to spread it, get it out of their system in about twenty seconds, others two or three minutes. If you're one of the people quick to recover you could be back in action in time to turn the tide, if not you could be an encumbrance. Thankfully, felids tend to target the threats first, so if you do take a breather it'll probably ignore you."

Julius
As Julius is busy enscribing the rune on his bolas a creature ducks into the arena from the opposite side of the room (See the description of Ollrith's opponent). Judging by its lack of reaction to the daylight, he can only assume it is diurnal, or has adjusted to daylight.
