Then Cary leans back and then says nothing for a moment, she closes her eyes and breaths in and out for a few moments before stating in dwarvish "< Dense enough to make basalt look like pumice...>"

She then switches back to common, "I think that is the phrase for you Ms. Cottonwood that the dwarves would call you...for you see the most likely conclusion is that she was accusing you of stealing magical objects.... specifically your blue stone.....which I assume you found in some of the local ruins here about?..What exactly did she steal from these other two individuals? ....I find it odd that they didn't report the thefts either...and what 'infermation' was she demanding?"

Cary isn't looking at Joe but up at the sky...apparently trying rhythmic breathe out the feeling inside but listening obviously.

Ghrem gives a small shake of his head at Cary's question but does note about the thefts,

"The two claimed that the victim attempted to steal from them but caught her doing it. In one case the victim simply denied it and the second she said it had been she who was attacked and the woman had tried to rob her. In neither case was it clear what had happened and there were no other witnesses. The victim did earn a... Reputation in the short time she was here. In all fairness to Ms. Cottonwood, the victim picked fights wherever she went."

He considers a moment then continues,

"She had been warned and strongly...encouraged to move on. Only her daughter's very pregnant state kept us from sending them to the next village."

He then looks a Cary with interest,

"How would the victim know what was and wasn't from any ruins?"

Does the darkness dissipate as Kroshav finishes the demon?
Is the hand/arm still moving about? or did the demon grow out of Jaq's old arm?

She looks at Ghrem and answers "Really, I am surprised she noticed, but obviously I was wrong about the temple...she...and Ves found it in a bandit camp..."
She asks Ghrem "Who is Ves?"

Cary sighs and glares right back at Joe "You fustrate me Madam...you dribble out information in drips and drabs with no sense of logic, or order. If the first time I had asked you 'what could have drawn the woman's attention?' You could have simply informed us that you were working with your vary obvious flying magic stone. We would have identified the possible clue, as all facts may or may not be actual clues, and moved on. But no, we've had to have a rather unordered, unorthodox debreif from you which covered everyone else before actually addressing the possible connection between you two...I know...racism...but that is only a possible clue as well"

Cary moves sligtly adjusting the weight of her sword,

"Now then we have a potential theory. That our victim...who has some obvious magical connection, was looking for magical items clandestinely...Which seems the to be the only reasonable connection to her murder and ritual disfigurement we can identify....unless your going to tell me that there is a magical anti-racism group murdering annoying racists and ritually mauling them?"

She pauses for a moment then goes on ." The magical item theory fits with the supposed attempted robberies, if the victim was looking for something specific then she wouldn't be trying to take anything...Our victim might have poked around elsewhere without being caught. Also there is the specific items connection to these bandits..."

She pauses and narrows her eyes. "No...that doesn't work...that doesn't mesh...why hide a bandit theft and be serching for the items here? Although the items serched for and the items recovered may be diffrent...still why would bandits cache something so valuable rather than fence it immediately?"

"What can you tell us about these 'bandits?'"

((The darkness is still there as is the arm according to what you heard from Ygar. Kroshav killed a demon but it doesn't seem like the threat is over.))
----
Ghrem answers,

"Ves, Vesri, is Ms. Cottonwood's travel companion."

Ghrem adds,

"She was supposedly trying to steal money in both cases. The altercation with the trapper was about refusing to pay for meat. The incident with the gnome is difficult to understand..."

Ghrem offers on the point of why things weren't sold immediately,

"We are several days to a week from anywhere of any size?"

He also scoffs at Cary having trouble with Joe as a witness/suspect and mutters,

"Wait until you talk with the gnome and the dwarf."

Per Ghrem's logic about stashing things, "But considering the value...do you as a bandit set off with what is a 1000 gp or more haul, or wait around to pick up what else you can from the surrounding territory to make things cost effective?"

Cary replies to the theft information, "Damn...that...blows my theory apart...but suposedly? Did you ask about how the targets determined that her theft attempts was focused on their money? And you confirmed that the family consumed the meat?"

Jaq uses his movement and his cunning action if need to move to the opposite wall. He will end up two squares east of the green glowing axe.
He will hold his action, if he sees the arm he will try throwing the axe he borrowed from Kroshav at it.

((I think Jaq got the pick rather than the axe?))
----
Ghram thinks for moment,

"I honestly don't know what I would do as a criminal? Probably I would get as much as I could before I attracted too much attention then I would try to sell the items as far from where I stole them as I could?"

In response to the next question,

"Well the young woman said she caught Belice, the victim, holding the family's money chest in their wagon. The dwarf says she caught the victim sneaking money from her trade table chest and some jewelry. Couldn't confirm either of their claims and victim didn't have any money on her when we checked either time. There was no disagreement about whether they ate the meat, only whether or not they had already paid for it. The trapper said the victim and her family hadn't and the victim said they had. Loudly and at length."

Ghram decides to explain the remaining suspect (other than the son-in-law),

"The gnome says they had a 'trade' dispute. A witness said she tried to choke the gnome but he, and she, denied that when a soldier arrived."

Faylin continues their focus on keeping the darkness back and manages to maintain this turn,

"I agree that we don't want to loose those in the corner. Let me know from inside the darkness if you need it!"

Gabrie and Ygar both attack inside the darkness. Ygar curses as he and his floating ax both seemingly miss.

"Aye can't hit the wiggly thing in the darkness. Anyone help with that?"

A flash of light inside the darkness causes the darkness to shrink slightly and Gabrie calls out,

"I am hitting it just fine! By the light of Lathander!"

Jolly moves forward slightly and readies an attack for when the darkness moves, he gives Kroshav powerful slap with his shield after the dragonborn destroyed the...thing in front of them saying with a bit of awe in his voice,

If Cary agrees he will take Joe and her to the two tents being guarded. One has a clear smell of blood coming from it. People are walking by and trying to get a glipse but the insides of the tent are completely blocked by the tent flaps.

Cary spots very little of interest around the tents and the tent in question. Ghrem watches her methods with interest as Joe makes a deduction. Ghrem chuckles quietly as Joe finishes then glances down and notices she is serious. He coughs into his hand before saying,

"Scared of Belice? Were you scared of her? She was an old woman. I don't think anyone was scared of her, they just didn't like her. Likely for good reason. Did anyone you 'interviewed' Ms. Cottonwood express any fear of her?"

Joe's detect magic ritual completes and she can see a very faint magical aura from the tent with the blood. In fact it seems to be the blood itself that is ever so faintly magical. It is so faint Joe cannot discern the school.

"The daughter and son-in-law have been given a place by the squad's tents. From what I understand she wasn't due for another couple months but today's events have maybe kicked things off early. Our medic is monitoring it."

Again Lurn's spiritual blade swings blindly at the fallen arm, with little success. Lurn, meanwhile, notes the collapse of the remaining visible enemy and decides to try plunging into the darkness, reaching for where the arm should lay with Inflict Wounds.

Spiritual Weapon: 2D20.LOW(1)+8 = [2, 6]+8 = 10
1D8+5 = [1]+5 = 6

Inflict Wounds: 2D20.LOW(1)+8 = [19, 13]+8 = 21
3D10 = [6, 10, 2] = 18

Inside the darkness there is a thunk on stone that indicates a miss by Lurn's magically summoned weapon. Ignoring the three shadowy creatures in the southwest corner of the room Lurn wedges himself into the darkness beside Ygar and gropes around the ground for the withered arm. He manages to get a grip on the arm, feeling it twist unnaturally under his touch, and channels a spell into it. To his surprise the arm twists and skeletal fingers grab him back and he feels like he is falling/being pulled forward as incredible pain lances into him...

((Give me a con save and then a strength save!))

The darkness swells again and the whooshing noise Kroshav heard is clearly audible to everyone in the room as the temperature in the room begins to drop rapidly. The shadows in the corner turn to the darkness but then quickly duck down to avoid looking in Gvin's direction. Gvin remains where she is and looks to be preparing a spell should she catch glimpse of the arm.

Ghram gives a sharp response to Joe's comments,

"She was unable to overpower a gnome, and the gnome had no injuries if she had been trying to choke him. Did her son-in-law say he got the burns from her or is that something your are simply supposing as well? You saw the body Ms. Cottonwood, did it look like something a vigilante would do? I am quite aware that even an old woman can cause damage but, excepting potentially the incident with the gnome, her alleged actions amounted to petty mischief and theft."

The inside of the victim's tent is a mess but nearly all the blood is on the ground, very little on the tent itself. Considering the damage done to the body this seems unusual and suggests that whomever did it must have had prodigious strength, very sharp claws or both to not have flung more blood around.

((Joe can give me an arcana check for the reasons the blood might be faintly magical.

@Quarg, why did you roll with advantage on the investigation?))
