Random question/suggestion.

There was some (very mino) talk over on bbg about single player mode - if this happens, then that would set precedents for potential cooperative play, where the game itself is the challenge and each party is cooperatively attempting to beat it (with perhaps automated groups of 'villainous' party's attempting to scupper you, or at least the chance for 'random encounters' which simulate the chance of having other opponents challenge you).

This would be awesome to add, if you think you can pull it off.

You could even just craft it as an expansion which adds in a bunch of 'random encounter' cards that just have a score and challenge type, which are governed with dice determination or escalating frequency due to seeded decks or recycled/culled draw decks. You could even make use of the random encounter cards in some location quests, which make them less predictable in their difficulty. This means it can work as a bolt-on for the normal game, and support variant play for those who enjoy cooperative play.

So I'll just leave these ideas here, in case you wanted to build on them. /subtle hint dropping

Hmmm. That would be a nice stepping stone into DnD imo. First you play a nice, rather simple card game that holds up the framework of the story and then you build your own stories in DnD. That would be a great idea.

As an aside: As a DM couldn't you set up the game that way as it is (although needing a lot of creativity and acting as a DM for the scenarios)? You would just have to change it slightly and create the stories.

Questions about dying/dead characters and treasure.

Can I still assign treasure to a dying character when I receive it and during the preparation phase? Can I take treasure from a dying character during the preparation phase to assign to a different character?

A dead character is removed from the game, so I assume you can no longer assign treasure to her. What happens to the treasure she was carrying when she died?

When a character in your party completes the objective of their quest (E.g., Kin helps another party, Kore wins a combat challenge), you remove one of your quest tokens.

Now it's worded like this: "Remove a quest token whenever [/b]Kore[/b] wins a Combat challenge."

So that means that, yes, Kore has to be the one to win the combat challenge. But nothing prevents you from winning the game with Kore alone. You can simply win 15 combat challenges and do nothing else for your other character's quests.
I haven't actually read that much of the rules, but I sincerely hope that this won't be a viable strategy. ( I would guess the ideal is for your highest-scoring character to complete a maximum of 60-70% of your tokens, and a minimum of 40-50%)
Too large a percentage(A character completing most of the game by himself) would mean the idea of multiple paths to victory is pointless, while too small a percentage would mean the idea of choosing a character and giving him lots of items is pointless and ineffective.

Are my worries unfounded?

You can not add treasure to a character that is dying, but you can move treasure off of them. If your character dies they are removed from play so yes you can't add to them at that point. Anything they were carrying at the time can be reassigned to an ally. If you can't carry something it is discarded.

Saying you can win that way is simply illustrative of the rule. You don't have to complete the individual quests of each character. You do have to remove all of your quest tokens. And you can do that via any combination of your character's quest objectives. I don't think I've seen a game where a single character has gotten more than 7 quest tokens in a single game.

So, to restate, I was simply illustrating the point. That is not a realistic path to victory, mostly because if you tried to use only one character to win the game you would be far behind someone who is using all three.

I know you guys have asked for some more gameplay examples. The latest dev diary I wrote up has some of that included. Evertide Games Website

Nothing real technical, but I'll hopefully cover some of that soon. Speaking of soon, please don't forget the live QA session tonight, it will be legendary!

Hey, we did the thing. It's long but it's sooooo satisfying:

On the Card, you call MinMax's Sword Oblivian, but in the comic, it's called Oblivious. This should be an easy fix.

"We have revealed all the stretch goals we have planned on the Stretch Goal map on the main page."

So all the Kickstarter stretch goals have been 'revealed', but how is that helpful when there's no information on what the soon to come 'Purse of Coins' is?
Is it a game mechanic, or a felt bag to keep game components in, or what?

Similarly, while "Shifting Swords" is a great name for something, it's about as meaningful as "Yummy-yuck Moss" as a stretch goal description without some details being included.

kickstarter wrote:This complete supplemental set to GAR includes a completely revised playmat with an adventure map for movement across all the locations in the realm, spots for all the settings piles and a spot for each of the game tokens. It also includes a double sided character token for each of the main characters (including all bonus characters), 10 additional action cards and a supplemental rules for party based movement.
So I just had to ask this question from my holiday location:

Is this seperate ruleset going to be available for people who are buying it after the kickstarter or is this an exclusive? Seems pretty big gameplay wise to leave out. With all the extra cards and rules the kickstarter gives, the product sounds like its going to be only half of the full game when its on the shelves.

Anyone else seeing a problem with this?

I agree. I donated early on for the Shield of Wonder set. And as much as I want the move ruleset, I can't justify paying twice again what I've paid (nearly). So I hope it will be available separately. Especially since the core game itself will be without it.

I was personally fine with the kickstarter, the bonuses and such. But now... you guys are good. I really want to see everything after we hit 180k (besides the swords, not sure what that or the purse are) in the game, in particular the bonus location, minis, and the freaking mobile app (is it like a full blown play online with other players mobile app? I would love that!)

you guys are great, and I feel horrible that all this cool stuff was left locked. Still, I don't have anymore money, so good luck with the rest of the campaign! :D

I just saw that all the stretch goals went live.
Interesting that the stretch goals apparently do not correlate with costs to develop that stretch goal...
30k for deck dividers?
50k for "purse of coins"?
only 30k for a mobile app?

Okay, seeing that you have to ship out the stuff to all the previous backers too, the costs need to be paid by the surplus after having given every new backer what the previous backers got as extras too. And the extras for theprevious backers drains the "new stretch goal pot" quiet a bit.

Yet, it just looks misbalanced to me.
Especially "a new location" seems out of proportion.....

Well, that's my opinion anyway.
And I pity myself for knowing that I will not be able to play the next 5 years at least...
And after that period, I have plenty of want-to-do things lined up already....

We tried to keep most of them pretty self explanatory, I know some of them are more vauge. Briefly, Purse of Coins is a new token type in the game that provides alternate rules for how you collect treasure at the end of an encounter. Shifting Swords is our take on oblivious. Oblivious isn't really one card. It's one card for each material type, and then oblivious. Like I've said a few times in this QA, Oblivious is still a work in progress, but I think this is the path I want to take with it.

The movement rules are completely optional, and you could do them without the mat. And I want to be really clear, if I felt the rules were core to the experience they would be in the core set (In my honest opinion, the movement rules detract from the core game, but some people really like them so we wanted to include them as an option up front). I'll make sure there is a way for you guys to play the movement version without the mat. None of the additional components are nescessary for the rules to work.

The app is a really cool idea we have to take this game and make it digital and we talked about it some early in the project. I think it would play a lot like the core tabletop game, but it has a lot of cool stuff that honestly is too much to explain here. Suffice to say, it's a) early in development and b) it's really unbelievably cool.

Since it's been said a few times, i'll restate. Stretch goals do not represent the cost of the goods in them. Nor are they intended to. You are correct you have to back upgrade every copy of the game, which really changes the value equation. But mostly, we wanted to add cool stuff to the game, and this is the way to do it and also ensure everyone who works so hard to make goblins (e.g. Tarol) get rewarded.

Sorry for not reading everything through properly.
(Maybe this is answered either here somewhere or on the kickstarter campaign, but I seriously got lost among all the information... :( )

I have just noticed that we can back the campaign via the shop by using paypal. This would be a viable way for me as I sadly can't do Amazon.

I'd gladly buy the 55$ backer pack. However, since the Kickstarter requires an additional 15$ for international delivery, I assume this will be added somewhere too. The question is: where? If there is no built-in option to add the extra cost, shall I just donate 15$ to a paypal address along with some kind of ID for the original purchase?

I haven't started the buying process yet, so sorry if this might be in there along the way. In any case, if someone could enlighten me before I do something wrong, it would be greatly appretiated. (Also, my paypal account does not have a "real" bank card attached to it, I obtain money via other paypal transactions there. Do I have to validate my account with a credit/debit card or can I just buy with it the way it is? Some shops (in-game stores, Steam, etc.) allow me to buy their stuff w/o a card, and others sadly don't. If "no card" is no go, then consider this whole post moot from me.)

When you go through the store it will prompt you to select international shipping for 15 when you check out.

If you want to test, just add the item to your cart and then do a shipping quote.

If that doesn't work, shoot an email to graydon@evertidegames.com and he'll sort you out.

Thanks for the info! Clicking through the shopping went smoothly, and unless I messed up something I should be now a Brassmoon Courtyard Adventurer. :) I want my goodies NOW! J/k, it can wait.

Also, that mobile app sounds interesting! I've just began to work as an Android developer, so that makes me twicefold curious... :D

So, there appears to have been a complete re-write of the gameplay rules. Where can I go to read more about that?
