Hello Kaylak.
Welcome to the forums, sorry for being late.
And yes, Yala is great, but personally I love how Pan (her Ogre) is taking care of her....
(Although he emotionally needs Yala, and physically needs her vision)

She is feeling more comfortable now.
And she retook full artistic control (no more external artist laying the final touch on a page).
Which gave her back artistic satisfaction she didn't even noticed she lacked since she gave shading out of hands.

And with improved well-feeling and satisfaction of her work, she is more motivated to actually sit down and draw lines.

Ah, ok.
I read that it was due to an overdue tax bill rather than any other reason.

Tax bill I've also not heard anything about.
Maybe Canada did a tax cut for self-employed artists?
Or the tax authorities recognised the medical bill for the hormone treatment? (Which could reduce taxable income considerably)

I simply don't know what Generic was referring to, but wanted to make sure if I need to dig out Ellipsis' tweets for reference.

Nah. The tax bill was referred to in a tweet by Elli on 29 Dec 2019 on the Goblins Twitter.
In it, she mentions of skipping an appointment with their accountant due to an upset tummy.

Why? Accidentally not paying years worth of taxes.

It certainly explains why comics have been averaging every two weeks and why an awesome colorist in Cheyenne Wright has been dropped. Honestly, I only started reading this because he was attached to it because his work on Girl Genius was just amazing.

Also: British Columbia is pretty inexpensive for TRT. $293, $203 and $173 respectively.

It's funded at the provincial level.

Elli prefers to draw the comic herself. She brought on a colorist to help with the workload, but he couldn't keep up. So she went back to doing it herself. Then she hired Cheyenne, but found that she was happier doing it herself. She's learned new techniques from both colorists, but she likes having creative control and her own style.

She did mention something about taxes a while back. But don't assume you know their finances or the ins and outs of their personal lives. Frankly, supporting a household on a self-published comic is pretty impressive.

As for comic scheduling... It's always been chaotic. She used to put out several updates a week, back in the early days. But as she got better at drawing, things changed. She picked up more skill and got better tools, which helped things go faster, but she also started doing bigger, more detailed, and more intricate pages. So it ended up slowing things down because she can't publish less than her best. Life has interfered with things, too, including the mental breakdown from a combination of work stress, the unconscious battle around coming to terms with being trans, and other life factors.

For a while, she was putting out updates once a week, aiming to have them ready every Monday. But it wasn't sustainable and we've dropped to roughly every two weeks. But I've stayed over at their house more than once, and I can assure you that she spends the bulk of her waking hours at her desk drawing. Every day, I'd wake up to find her working at it, and she'd still be drawing when I went to bed. And feel guilty about any time we pulled her away for a while. She always puts out updates as quickly as she can, and worries that it's not fast enough.

So, no. It's not a tax bill suddenly making her more productive or driving her decision to part ways with Cheyenne.

You might want to check that - I did, however, get the date wrong. The copied tweet is pretty damning.

This afternoon, we have to drive into town and get our taxes done. We're behind by multiple years (I know, it's embarrassing), but we've organized all the receipts, which took us like a week and now we're ready for the next step of finding out how much we owe.

I'm aware of the tweet. I mentioned having read it. But the implication that she was previously slacking off and only increased productivity because of the tax bill is 100% wrong, and I explained why in detail. So you can drop the false speculation.

I agree with Wears here.
Not knowing how much you should have paid and thus didn't pay, doesn't mean you owe a lot.
A comic creator usually does nto have much income, and thus little to actually pay as income tax.
There may be a fine though for not having filed the receipts.

But if the above tweet is all, there's nothing to base any assumption on.
It may even be that the tax office and the consultant calculate that Elli paid too much, and got a tax refund.

(There was a temporary increase, because when Elli joined the team from Lar D'Souza, (s)he got pushed to increase the publication speed, because that would be better for ad income and everything else.
A proposal by Lar D'Souza was to try using a colourist and concentrate on creating the story and the panels, and leave the rest to colouring artists.
Later, when Elli retook artistic control, she found out how much she disliked having given away the control, and how happy she is she took it back, even if it slows down page creation.)

With all due respect, you didn't actually explain anything and tried to just flannel an answer, which is just appalling.

After doing a little bit more research on this, there was help from the house purchase, the surgery, the patreon income, all of which is classed as foreign income and which means tax has to be applied and looking this up made me wince. Basically, their accountant should have been on at them at this from day zero - however they should have also been proactive on this as well.

As an accountant who sub-specialises in foreign income, I think I know more about this subject matter than you do, so do not presume to try and lecture me in a subject that I am more than qualified in. Family friend does not qualify as a subject matter expert - in many cases those who are also tend to get looked at as well. You just have to look at the myriad of cases ongoing in the US to see how far reaching it can get - Ponzi being the most infamous of these.

In addition, when the tweet states "we owe", there is no rebate.
To be honest, when pages started coming more than every two weeks, I was initially delighted and even Patreons increased to as it came across as being reliable, but that single tweet completely soured it and, on checking, I was left with more disappointment than anything else.

we're ready for the next step of finding out how much we owe.
When discussing taxes, I always presume I owe, but often in the end I actually get a refund.
(Because I pay my monthly prepayments without all the small rebates (only the big ones, like family; but not the "stuff for office, stuff for health,..."), and apply the rebates only on the yearly income declaration. Often pushing me down to a value that's below what I already paid. - I'm in that lucky position that I can spare the money during the year and thus prevent unwanted surprises.)
From what I've read in your quote, Elli and Danielle simply did not know how much taxes they might have to pay, and how much taxes they didn't pay the last years. They simply never added the numbers, thus didn't file tax declarations, got no tax statement from the tax authorities.
And now they have collected the papers indicating tax deductibles (self-employed have a lot more tax-deductibles than office workers like me)
And back then they needed to find out what the final tax number will be. For that they go to the accountant, so the accountant can add the numbers from the papers they brought the accountant.

I don't know her case, so I'll refrain from guessing more.

That is not due respect at all.

And you're the one lecturing me on things that I know more about. Because we're not talking about tax law. (And no responsible professional accountant would be throwing around wild speculation about someone's finances without actually knowing the larger picture of their resources, expenses, deductions, etc.) We're talking about Elli's life, motivation, financial situation, and productivity. And I know a lot more about those things than you do.

Your continuing to argue with a mod after specially and officially being told to drop the false speculation and innuendo has earned you an official warning. Furthermore, it appears that your only reason for being on this forum is to stir up trouble. You've never posted anything else in the months you've been here. That, too, is against forum rules.

I'll say it again: Elli puts out pages as quickly as she's able. That has always been the case. That pace has gone up and down over the many years that I've been reading the comic due to a number of factors. Her skill level, her drawing tools, the level of detail she's putting in, her mental state, etc. The breakdown a few years back slowed and then stopped pages. Her coming to terms with being trans has made her happier and freer. But the financial motivation hasn't changed. This is her job, and she's always done it to the best of her ability. She's always put in the maximum available time. Suddenly realizing she owes taxes would give anyone anxiety, but it's not affecting the comic updates. And your continuing to sidestep that reality and push the lie is doing no one any favors.

I know because I walked head long into it at one time, not expecting something like that. I'm sorry I asked about taxes. This thread is about Yala, I think? So let's stick to that subject.

Had to read back a bit, but then found again that they were picking classes the last (#maybe?) we saw Yala and friends.

There was call for Rogue and Wizard, but we weren't shown who called and picked what.

Have we had any official word on what happened to the group after splitting with main gobs?
