Goblins Character Stats

This thread has been resurrected from the third forum thanks to the work of Alavar. Mad props to him. :praise:

Well, the idea of this thread is, without assumptions, to keep a record of each major character's stats according to what is shown in the comic (or what Thunt might have said in other sources).
Let's also keep in mind that the rules might be bent sometimes in order to keep the flow of the comic going. There might be also some house-rules that we will never know.
Hell, some stats might not able to be measured at all! But we'll do our best!
If some content is changed due to this, then some data might have to be modified. We'll see.

The comic is very long, so we'll need everyone's help to make this work. I will add the source for the info between "()". I'll just put here the date of the update. You just add the "http://www.goblinscomic.com/" before the number and that's it.
For example, "(10262010-3)" means that you have to go to "http://www.goblinscomic.com/10262010-3" to see the source of the stat mentioned.

This thread WILL contain spoilers, so I suggest you stop here if you haven't read the whole comic.

This thread will be in constant expansion and update, so stay tuned and add what you can.

While it may be an approximation at best, would individual feats of a certain stat serve as a basis for estimating a stat? Like a character pulling off a feat of strength, balance, making a difficult jump, etc?

The thing is: almost everything you do in D&D is affected by a roll of d20. Which makes things difficult, because you don't know if the character is really good at something, or just had a lucky roll.


EDIT
There are other things that don't depend on the dice, though: carrying capacity, feat prerequisites, race and aging bonuses/penalties, etc.

That is true, which is part of the reason why it would be an estimation, especially if a particular instance of might, agility, or other stat-based action was an outlier relative to what that character is normally capable of.

It's a nitpick, but I have to. "Base Attack Bonus" is solely gained from Class Levels or Hit Dice, not size modifiers or feats. This is important because Base Attack Bonus determines additional attacks, and qualifications for feats. Essentially, all the goblins have one less than what is currently listed (since you have it listed as +1 from size).

Aside from that, a few important notes:
  • Several characters are missing relatively mundane items (Thac0 is missing his cane-swords, Chief his Spear, etc).
  • Minmax no longer has his backpack, as it has ceased to exist. He does, however, have a leather strap that hangs loosely over his shoulder.
  • Forgath has his armor (type?), as well as his Mace/Holy Symbol.
Meh, I'm not gonna go through the comic again to find out what we're missing. Those are a few things I just noticed.

Fair enough. Changed it to "To Hit Bonus".

Well, if we could get the link to the comic in which that's shown, I could add it to the list.
The panel of Chief's death next to his spear would be good. The latest pic of Thac0 showing if he has 1 or the 2 cane swords. When Minmax lost his backpack. And so on.
Meh, I'm not gonna go through the comic again to find out what we're missing. Those are a few things I just noticed.
I understand, and I don't expect that either. We are a lot of people here in the forum, so I trust that we'll manage to do the job together.

Complains explains (without refrains) that the color of an IME is a glimpse of their soul, or something. The image factor seems to be a contagion of the imagination: the Goblins develop complex IMEs because they've seen it happen, but all other players maintain simple IMEs.

The image gets more complex the higher your level.

the only spell he has cast since hitting level 3 has been inflict light wounds here. Well, he did turn undead here but I don't think that adds any information. it only proves that he has a charisma of 6 or above, when we are assuming 8 because we have no evidence otherwise.

We know Minmax has only combat oriented skills. I figure the four skills he could have are tumble, balance, intimidate, and bluff. Since with is low intelligence he would have fewer than 14 skill points at level 3 (probably 8, since if he had intelligence of less than 8 he would have had no skills as a level 1 fighter, so I guess we can bet his Int is 8 or 9), I believe he would no go cross-class, but that would leave him with only intimidate, so it's a hard call. I'd bet he had at least 4 intimidate at level 1.

Edit: Thaco is also old enough to be getting age modifiers for sure, maybe even venerable age. That may help hone in his stats.

I find this interesting and we could try to build on it to get somewhere.
He's "not as fast as he used to be", to that hints that he's got penalties to his physical attributes, or at least to dexterity.
In the same page, Thaco says two important statements: that he has wisdom due to age and that he was around during Advanced Dungeons and Dragons.
Now, all this point out that he is, indeed, and OLD goblin. But just how old? Wee need to know this in order to put him in the right age category.

The Age Categories that give penalties to dexterity are Middle Age, Old, and Venerable.
Due to his skin and face, he doesn't look like a middle aged goblin. So that leaves Old and Venerable. If we look at how he fights and the things he does, I think that he's more likely to be Old rather than Venerable. But that's not proof enough.

So, let's have a look at the numbers.
This data was extracted from here where a user passed the data we had from 2nd edition to 3.x.
Goblin Age Categories
Middle Age: 20
Old: 30
Venerable: 40
Maximum Age: +2d10
Thaco's introduction was published in 24/09/2005. And AD&D lasted 10 years, from 1989 to 1999.
If he was a 15 year old full mature goblin able to fight at 1989, by 2005 he would have 31 years old: an Old Goblin.

I don't know if we have many other comments and references as to how old Thaco actually is, but I guess this is a start.

I was under the impression it had been something like 20 years since Thaco escaped Goblinslayer, probably a misreading of this comment. But Thaco only says he was gone for a few years(ambiguous). We also know he was gone long enough for chief to grow up and take control of the war camp (chief is a newborn when Thaco leaves.

So guess venerable was a stretch, but old seems accurate.

Yeah, all that real life years was surely crap by my part, haha.
But even if in the Thuntverse goblins max life is 30, with all the evidence we've gathered I think we are in position to state that Thaco is almost surely and Old goblin. Unless someone comes up with better evidence suggesting otherwise, I think we could change his estimated stats accordingly.
