Things Spiderwrangler has arted

Thought I'd make a thread to contain the various things I've drawn and posted at some point.

This is a "Wheel Bug", Arilus cristatus, which is a true bug that feeds by stabbing its prey with the pointy beak. It is stippled (my favorite art style to do), and based on a pinned specimen I have in my collection. This is one of the few insect drawings that I did just for fun, though I ended up using it as the cover of the lab manual when I taught a general entomology course.

Not sure on the species of this guy, but it and a bunch of its siblings were parasitizing a cabbage moth cocoon. This was drawn as part of an Insect Morphology course I took, all the drawing was done looking through microscopes to see enough detail. This is the stippled version of the head, which should give you an idea of just how tiny this little wasp is, as the scale bar in the lower right is 0.25mm.

The pencil sketch upon which the stippled head was based.

The thorax of the parasitic wasp.

The abdomen.

The forewing. Compared to bigger wasp wings, they venation is extremely reduced in this species, as it is for many tiny wasps, they don't require the same structural support to maintain flight.
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/4AL92 ... 30-h643-no[/thumbnail]

The hindwing. The hooks in the leading edge latch onto the hind margin of the forewing to lock the two together during flight.
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/2t2P7 ... 58-h643-no[/thumbnail]

The female reproductive structures. The long bits are what make up the ovipositor (the stinger of some bees and wasps), whose primary function is depositing eggs. In the case of this wasp, it deposits them in the caterpillars of the cabbage white butterfly.

I got pretty busy with my schooling, so didn't do much art for a number of years, until I started GMing some games here on the forum. Most of them were just quick sketches to get a general sense of things across, but there are some that I had more fun with.

The torn off arm of a clank the spark players found in "Surviving Castle Heterodyne".
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/K1b2i ... 75-h627-no[/thumbnail]

That same clank arm holding down a scroll on how to build a mechanized arachnid.
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/SUhkn ... 79-h561-no[/thumbnail]

One of the players wanted to lash a broken sword to a broom to make a crude spear. Sure, why not... I was tempted to have it result in sweeping disasters, but didn't...
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/2RBGD ... 24-h617-no[/thumbnail]

The players found a room filled with massive honeycombs and thumb sized bees... they later let hem out to play...
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/As_fZ ... 28-h643-no[/thumbnail]

Across the hall was a room filled with a nest of enormous rats... with metal teeth.
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/rSHzj ... 96-h643-no[/thumbnail]

I kind of fell off on more complete sketches, but eventually they ended up fighting a snake-octopus hybrid.
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/NPxxh ... 93-h643-no[/thumbnail]

In other media, I started playing around with a sketching program on my phone, and produced this sketch, which was the basis for my GAL 8 adventure... of course it would be another year and a half before my players actually saw this image.
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/IdRjp ... 40-h643-no[/thumbnail]

About the same time and with the same program, I made a sketch of Ask's GAL character.
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/R5JE0 ... 58-h643-no[/thumbnail]
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/M1txk ... 68-h643-no[/thumbnail]

For my dual kukri wielding wood elf ranger with a spider companion (in a game that tried and failed to get off the ground multiple times... :( ), I sketched my blade had a web enchantment on it that I'm not sure I ever got to trigger.
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/2ZCT5 ... 79-h643-no[/thumbnail]

In my GAL quest, some of the players ran into a huge rat chewing on a human rib...
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/rOyoX ... 88-h644-no[/thumbnail]

There were also huge mosquitoes the size of their arm...
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/e7bNq ... 96-h643-no[/thumbnail]

..that they punched...
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/7QCsV ... 75-h643-no[/thumbnail]

...bludgeoned with maces...
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/MNxjC ... 35-h643-no[/thumbnail]

...and sliced in half.
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/73AdZ ... 95-h643-no[/thumbnail]

They also ran into giant squirrels that can hold their own in a toe to toe fight with an armed goblin (I might have a problem with large wildlife...).
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/1VCU0 ... 45-h643-no[/thumbnail]

After fighting the squirrel, Synch's character found a ring with a magical aura...
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/FuD88 ... 22-h643-no[/thumbnail]

Asks made a quip about the "One Ring", so I (noncanonically) turned him into a goblin-nazghul.
[thumbnail]http://i1360.photobucket.com/albums/r65 ... qxtecq.jpg[/thumbnail]

Turns out the ring makes melee weapons held in that hand lick with a cold ethereal flame and has other effects in combat...
[thumbnail]http://i1360.photobucket.com/albums/r65 ... xbsmks.jpg[/thumbnail]

Nerre's character found an amber amulet with a living tarrasque scale embedded in it that gives the wearer regenerative protection.
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/wim2a ... 60-h643-no[/thumbnail]

They encountered a mated pair of creatures that have ended up being referred to as "Big Paws", killing the male before rescuing one of the pups from being swarmed over by huge mosquitoes.
[thumbnail]http://i1360.photobucket.com/albums/r65 ... wgf0yl.jpg[/thumbnail]

They eventually walked into a minotaur blacksmith's home... who chucked an axe at them to say hello.
[thumbnail]http://i1360.photobucket.com/albums/r65 ... hp6wdb.jpg[/thumbnail]

I outsourced the drawing of the minotaur to Doodlemoogle (thanks again!).

Nikohl's character made a buckler out of a turtle shell.
[thumbnail]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/qAqg8 ... 04-h643-no[/thumbnail]

The GAL 8 goblins eventually faced off against a manipulative insectoid swamp witch that was creating thralls by using them as hosts for her larvae. I again outsourced her to Doodlemoogle who whipped this up based on my description for him to work with.

Quarg started a Pathfinder game where my character is a orc brawler (cross between fighter and monk). You should all go HERE to read up on what's happened, and then go HERE if you're interested in joining... our party got down to three players and we stopped updating. :(
[thumbnail]http://i1360.photobucket.com/albums/r65 ... j9nrft.jpg[/thumbnail]

My brawler has a battle mask he can put on to be extra intimidating.
[thumbnail]http://i1360.photobucket.com/albums/r65 ... mcgurb.jpg[/thumbnail]

Much more recently, I've done ones for characters in other games I'm playing, including my somewhat murderous, evil-adjacent dragon in Badge's Age of Dragons.
[thumbnail]http://i1360.photobucket.com/albums/r65 ... 1ar2rl.jpg[/thumbnail]

And in my first real-life tabletop RPG, my force-sensitive Kel Dor, who is very senile and elderly, Pelb Ket. An occasional nudist, he has a pet log named Kreg.
This was done on my phone using the same sketching program I used for the goblins and spiders previously.

They all show up for me?? Perhaps a future GAL quest will have to pit Leaves against the Destroyer of Worlds. ;)

I'm switching to using photobucket, are these showing up better?

Yup!!

We have such cool characters in Quarg's pathfinder! I hope that starts up again at some point.

Yeah, I think we need more players to make it go.
