Korrik adjusts his pack and tests the balance of it, then with a running leap, grabs the nearest vine and swings lithely across. One of the branches in the middle of the river collapses under the strain, but it doesn't stop him from making it across safely to the far bank. Unfortunately, it's unlikely that any of the others will be able to follow him this way...

((Perception checks from all of you please))

Syli busies herself with trying to dry herself off to really pay too much attention. She does gobble down the offered ration, though.

Kal is somewhat preoccupied with odd little facts and memories having to do with catfish.

Varsk takes a spot with his back to a tree and watches the hopping, throwing and swinging. He is mildly curious how they are going to manage to magic the rope over to the halfling on the other side but decides it isn't anything he can help with (unless they suggest throwing things) and instead focuses on scanning the far bank and the trees beyond as well as his immediate surroundings.

Korrik lands safely on the far bank, and turns his attention back to the rest of the party for no more than a few seconds before he hears the crack of twigs above and behind him. Spinning around, he turns just in time to see a truly enormous constrictor snake uncoil from the branches above him, fangs bared!

Gwen and Varsk see exactly what is happening, but the others are distracted.

Let's have some initiative rolls please :) Varsk, Gwen, Korrik and the snake will go in round 1 then everyone else can catch up in round 2. This is essentially a surprise round.

((After some high rolls, the lowest I can roll... why couldn't it have been a 1?!))

It's a full action to ready my bow, right?

No, you can draw your bow as a free part of your action.

((Ok, we'll resolve the first round while we wait on the remaining initiative rolls for Gwen, Mehriv and Syli))

The snake decends on Korrik, it's huge body casually dropping to the forest floor as it lunges its head forwards to strike at Korrik, biting him hard (-13 HP) before pulling its head back out of his melee range (the attack has a range of 10 feet).

Bite (ATT): 1D20+6 = [19]+6 = 25
Bite (DAM): 2D8+4 = [8, 1]+4 = 13

Varsk will straighten as he sees the massive snake drop near Korrik. Looking at the others he sees that most of them aren't paying attention. He considers the situation a moment before sighing and stepping into the water and promptly slipping.

((So I figured I need a dex check for the water and then an attack with disadvantage? But as he failed to even get off the bank I doubt the rest will matter.))

Dex: 1d20+3 = 4

Gwen hexes it for str checks and then blasts it with eldich blast.

eldrich blast and hex: 1D20+6 = [19]+6 = 25
1D10 = [9] = 9
1D6 = [2] = 2

<Merhiv, if it's still up, blast it with fire!>

Varsk sees the snake and doesn't hesitate as he steps bravely into the river, and almost immediately slips on a loose rock and falls in. Fortunately, he is close enough to the near bank that he is able to grab a tree root before he floats too far away. He is effectively prone.

Gwen curses the creature and blasts it with her Eldritch Blast, doing a reasonable amount of damage to it but it doesn't seem put off.

"Owwwww!"

Hold action to clobber it with my staff, and burn a ki to do Patient Defense in order to Dodge as my bonus action.

((...actually I don't know how that works. I guess so. The snake has a melee range on bite attacks of 10 feet, but pulling its head back takes it out of YOUR melee range, which is the trigger for an AOO in RAW. So... sure. Make the roll!))
