Raptor at Heart - OoC discussion/chat

Postby Mereneth » Sat Jun 22, 2013 7:57 am

Simple out of character thread for the Raptor at Heart players and anyone who happens to be reading our story.

Cleaned up the post and will update as things move along with the reboot. Page 18 marks the OOC content for Lost with the Wilds.

Player list:
  • Nikohl (FF4000)
    Spoiler: show
    Name: Brigitte
    Age: 17
Appearance: Small and wirily strong, with a young face and old eyes.
    Info:
Brigitte lives on the streets, and has done ever since she arrived from her home country of Haiti, smuggled in by a boat paid for by her desperate parents. She has always done what she needed to do to survive, and it's worked out ok so far. Once one of the other street rats beat her up and took the sleeping bag she'd been given by a kind passer by, but she's never let anything like that happen again. Sly and cunning, she makes her way through a combination of begging (taking advantage of her innocent wide-eyed appearance) and theft, and several years of eating out of the trash and sleeping in alley ways has made her particularly good at both. She has fleeting, childish dreams of making a fortune and rescuing her family from their poverty, but has the cynical heart of a girl who knows there's no such thing as fairy tales, and you only get what you can take.
    Raptor Appearance:
    Spoiler: show
    Brigitte:

Brigitte becomes an adult female velociraptor sporting lean muscles; she noticeably weighs less than the others. Her scales are a burnt orange with hint of red overtone, though her belly-to-tail scales are a very light cream color that the red and orange bleed into where they meet. Her feathering is softer, further belaying the agility that comes with her frame. It puffs up more around her eye ridges before merging together atop her head and drifting down her neck and finally spilling out onto her back in near downy fluff. Her tail feathers are fairly long, though the severity seen in some of the other raptors is almost missing and they drape together behind her, forming a scythe shape.
  • Gathersingredients(008000)
    Spoiler: show
Name: Lauren McKenzie from Bradfield, England. She's 17 years old, goes to school, and she just found out that her would-be-BF (she wants something serious, he's just interested in the carnal aspect of the relation) Jacob might have impregnated her in the night when her parents were out of town two weeks ago, when they ... tried stuff out. (She was late on her period, got nervous, made a test and it was positive. But as people more into this topic might know, there is the possibility of a false positive, too.) Now her world is in turmoil and she doesn't know what to do.
    Raptor Appearance:
    Spoiler: show
Lauren becomes a slender muscled female velociraptor. She is full grown, standing about 5' 11" tall, though lacking the muscle mass of a more senior female. Her scale-skin is a typical dark green and mottled brown that fades to a mossy tan along the belly and on between her legs till it nears the tip of her tail. Her feathers are an odd silvery brown, though the feather stock itself is the same green of her scale-skin. They [feathers]are longest on her tail tip and a fine fluff with a few small vanity plumes above the eye ridge. The feathering is thicker along the back of her neck and reduces to a fine fluff before vanishing near the bottom of the back of her neck in a tight V. Three mottled splotches stand out along her spine.
  • Arch Lich Burns (FF00FF)
    Spoiler: show
    Name: Henry
    Male-age 15
He was born in West Virgina.

His interests lie in theatrics and being a magician, many would probably call him mediocre at best but he has fun doing magic in front of friends and family being compleatly over dramatic in the shows. In order to get more money to support his hobby he sometimes goes into the streets to perform he was about to do a disappearing act when...
    Raptor Appearance:
    Spoiler: show
Henry will wake to his new form as a small, lithe raptor youth. His opaque white hide is tinted with pink, a coloration that appears more saturated near his joints. Similarly colored pink stripes branch from his spine and taper off before reaching too far down his chest. As an albino, his eyes are also a brilliant shade of pink, though the natural toughness of raptor hide doesn't lead to any normal afflictions albino's suffer from. Black feathering sprouts from his shoulders, tail tip and, in smaller size, eye ridges. A pink splotch on his right cheek roughly depicts a spade, as if from a playing card.
  • BadgeAddict
    Spoiler: show
    Name: Bjorn Hanssen
    Age: 27
    Year: ~ 857 A.D.

Bjorn was a fearless viking warrior who had over the course of his life lost his father, his mother and all of his siblings. Defending a village from constant pillaging was a difficult lot in life but it was the only thing one could do in an effort to have a home for your children to survive in. Unless of course you had no children...no wife, no nearby neighbors, no one at all. The village had been hit hard last summer leaving everyone in the village dead except for Bjorn who had been out hunting. When he had returned to the burning huts and bodies, he swore to revenge his family and village against the ones who had done this...the same ones who had done this every year for the past 3 years. Taking what little supplies he could find from the remains of the village, he headed south along the coast. He made fast progress alone and as he stepped into the village with blood in his eyes he started attacking. Axes in each hand, he ran through the village hacking down men left and right until the villages leader came in sight and suddenly an axe to the back ended his vengeance.

He fell like a stone and the last thing he saw before it all went dark was a blade chopping down toward his face.... At least now I can join my fathers in Valhalla....was his last thought before he died.
    Raptor Appearance:
    Spoiler: show
Bjorn appears as a mottled gray raptor with a streak of pale green starting at the base of his neck and running down his spine until it wraps around his tail and tapers off as it approaches the tip. Blood red freckling peppers his thighs, a pattern that also shows on each of his cloudy-white feathers on his shoulders, spine and elbow joints. His body sports a large frame and is endowed with exceptionally well muscled legs.
  • Samwiser(0040FF)
    Spoiler: show
    Name: Samuel Clemens
    Age: 18
    Gender: Male
    Country: USA

Sam was a trapeze artist. Worked at a Cirque du Soleil type place. Fairly short, but flexible and strong, he was capable of flying through the air with the greatest of ease. He was doing a doubles routine with one of his coworkers. He had just launched himself off of his swing, arms spread out so she could catch him. Their hands were inches from meeting when...
    Raptor Appearance:
    Spoiler: show
Samuel becomes a smaller-than-average adult female raptor; strong, muscular legs compensate greatly for the difference in body size compared to the others[6" or so, I'll let you decide just how much smaller]. Her new form's hide is a gentle blue with two sets of aquamarine haphazardly placed parallel stripes running the length of her body. Aquamarine feathers sprout from her shoulder blades, hips and wrists.
  • Feytala [#000040]
    Spoiler: show
    Name: Katrina Jansen
    Age: 24 (I imagine her from a not-so-far-future. Lets say 2020-2050)
Appearance: rather tall for a woman, slender, more wiry and athletic than muscular, with long auburn hair, sapphire eyes and a somewhat mischievous smile, which never seems to fully leave her lips. A fine scar runs from her left brow down to the left cheek (A tumble with someone who couldn't take a no... Don't worry, he looked much worse).

    Info:
Katrina hails from germany (Hey, yes, I am finally playing someone from my own country ! :D). She had a nice childhood - Well, as nice as it gets, when you're the only girl out of six children. In the end, she ended up being more of a boy, at least, thats how she usually sees it. The tomboyish attitude never left her - As didn't the instinctual care for the bigger family, start with the youngest. She did her military service, even when it wasn't compulsory for women, but it helped her to think a little bit more about what she wanted to do with her life. As it was, the military wasn't it. She was much to free-spirited and thick-headed to be good at following orders from people, which seemed to loose 5 points of IQ whenever gaining a rank. In the end, she did something entirely different and studied botany at the university of Heidelberg. She also is a practioner of tai chi and a semi-professional swimmer, as well as somewhat of a geek... Not that any of that will help her much in a non-human form.

So, hailing from a loving working class family in a rich country with no problems to feed herself and no real war the population would have noticed in three generations, with social healthcare that forbid the worst issues of poverty - her life was full of experiences, yet entirely more anticlimatic than that of other tranformed. She keeps a cool (if stubborn) head and all the strategic talent that role-playing games are able to give you. Hey, thats what half the people do at university...

Her last remembrance as a human is shaking the hand of her professor after reaching out to her degree. She never got it.
    Raptor Appearance:
    Spoiler: show
Katrina becomes an young-adult male raptor; lean and gangly, her new form shows signs of easy muscle development as well as the needs of a growing raptor. Katrina's hide is grey-black and sports more dominantly displayed grey stripes that taper away from each of the vertebra in his spine. Small, pearly white feathers adorn his eye ridges while larger feathering appears on his spine and wrist. His tail feathers are the same pearly white coloration, but are far softer than any others, giving it a fluffy appearance.

NPCs
Spoiler: show
Lilly: Female - 7 - Very into athletic activities - Was blowing out the candles on her birthday cake in front of her friends.
Raptor Appearance: Raptor female youth, rather similarly mirroring her previous existence in comparable age. Her slight body is pastel yellow with blue speckling running down the length of her spine. Her feathering colors are not evident as they are only just coming in.

Farah House: Female - 31 - Distraught mother - Was desperately clutching a pillow to her chest and trying her best not to cry as she stared at her phone, waiting for a call, good or bad, from the police search teams or her husband who was out with them.
Raptor Appearance: Farah takes on the form of an adult female raptor of average build. Her hide is a cream orange tint with darker orange streaks running down her sides, but seemingly deeper in her hide. Creamy brown feathers fluff out from her eye ridges, shoulder, tail tip and ankles.

DECEASED Gilroy Vanshoke: Male - 26 - All in the little details - Gilroy looked out into a crowded room as electricity surged through his body, his last thoughts of grim amusement that not one person even flinched as the smell of his own burning flesh filled the air.
Raptor Appearance: Adult Male Raptor - Gilroy's hide is a dark crimson that approaches black at the joints. Scar-white patterns that resemble lightning strikes are spread randomly over his body, though most notable are the ones on his forehead and forearms. He has no feathering unless you count the stubbly "dead" buds where feathering should occur.

Ambrose Durand: Male - 43 - Disgruntled "old" man - Ambrose stared at the massive tower of steel growing before him in the heart of France, grumbling to himself about the absurdity of such a creation. Oblivious to the cried warnings, he had began to approach the contractors office to argue his case when a steel beam sheared him nearly in half; his last conscious thought one of utter surprise before the cold call of death beckoned him into the void.
Raptor Appearance: Durand takes on the body of a mottled brown adult male raptor with no other significant hide markings. Brilliant white feathers sprout from his wrists, shoulders and tail tip.

Hammond Ghar: Male - 372 - Hammond was lost in deep space, froze within a cryogenic escape capsule. What thought the system allowed him only left him to mentally shrug as the capsule slowly finished another rotation and settled into the asteroid belt of an unknown planet.
Raptor Appearance: Young adult female - Hammond's scales are tinted an icy blue and shadowed with swathes of black that seem to swallow the light around them aside from tiny speckles of icy blue glittering as if stars themselves. No feathering aside from a solid set of them on the tail tip.

What can my raptor self do?
Spoiler: show
Well, here is the thing. You don't know! You've never been a velociraptor before [or have you? Sneaky sneaky] but even if that is the case, you've forgotten and have just landed yourself in this bizarre world as one of "Raptor at Heart"s pack members. You'll certainly learn along the way, but if what hasn't been learned won't show up here!

Now, given the nature of this game new arrivals won't be expected to go through some lengthy learning process for the sake of keeping the story rolling. When I introduce someone new your character will be capable of the basic stuff that the pack has learned so far. It'll be silly to expect each new player or returning player's character to be taught how to jump a few feet higher by scrunching your leg muscles like so and looking to the left, right? This doesn't mean you'll know absolutely everything that is safe to eat, though.

What the pack can share so far:
  • Dino ID: Stegosaurus; Allosaurus; Velociraptor

I really like what I've read so far...I didn't mean to use background in character interaction, but it does make it a better read when you can see the movements or actions of other characters through different eyes. It's all very exciting. I'm gonna proceed to give a brief sample of who Alex is, and some of his personality that i hope to stay true to.

As for a brief summary of Alex: Newly graduated university student who somehow got accepted onto an archeology dig site. He has no family to speak of, his parents both died when he was young, so he grew up alone. Lea, was the light of his life and when she left him he had nothing left. It's hard to grow up with no friends and no love, then find a friend and a love only to have it run away (she died) from you. Thus, Alex decided to end it, he was(is) depressed.

Personality: Most would think of Alex as shy, but what he is, is cautious. Having had his parents and then his girlfriend die (leave him as he sees it) he is cautious about creating new friendships as he fears that he is cursed in such a way that people who get close to him die.

In regards to concerns about large posts, i'm not expecting everyone to make massive posts at a time; just try to limit/shy away from very short posts/one liners. I am glad that the intro posts from everyone were done so well and had supporting length to them, including their last moments as humans, though.

Mind, most of my posts will be huge, as i'll be responding to several people at a go, roleplaying the npcs and offering story as well as keeping you on your toes in general.

How often (ish) are we expecting updates, Mereneth? I check the forums most days but I make an extra effort to pop on when I know the game might be waiting on me to move along.

As for character summaries: A lot of mine is right there in the sign-ups thread, she's an illegal immigrant whose family gave up most of what they had to get her into America to try and make a better life for her, but with no papers and no experience and no friends in the country she ended up on the streets straight away. She's got on pretty well, for a given value of well - she has her "home" and a few friends on the streets, she rarely goes too hungry or too cold. But she's still making her living as a thief and a beggar, and that didn't look like it was going to change any time soon. Before she woke up as a raptor, she'd been attacked near her home but didn't know who by. Personality wise, she's essentially a kind and good person at heart, but she's very cynical about everything and rarely trusts anyone enough to let that side of her show. She's family-oriented, or she would be if she considered anyone her family. She's probably set to be a pretty good "pack mate" but it's going to take a while for her to let her guard down beyond 'sticking together for survival and nothing else.'

So far I like the story going, aswell as everyone's rping. It's almost making me sign up, but I have to set the next minesweepers on track first, so yeah, just (not so) silent lurking for me, now.

By the way, I think that being able to "raptor talk" makes communication kind of easy, no? Well, I don't mean that it is too easy now, but it certainly alleviates the hardness of getting the hang of it. I've been curious how would you handle interacting with each other, this simple solution might even work nicely. :)

If nothing else, you can expect a new post every three days or so. However, if you guys are getting really into it and responding frequently, i'll try to respond as much as every day. The next content post is already being typed up, in fact. I'd have had it more or less done the day before if not for the virus finishing its course.

Mind, if you're not responding a lot [current exception is Theis2, who has informed me why he might have a lull between posts] you stand a very real risk of dying or suffering injury. Now, I don't mean that you must feel obligated to respond to every single post I make; you could be interacting with your fellow players and get stuck waiting on them or something. Just don't expect long, unannounced absences to leave you unscathed. [If the case of such absence turns out to be a very serious thing, such as your mom in the hospital or what have you and I 'take action' before being informed, i'll undo and rewrite whatever i need to.]

@Looks-

I'd considered it during sign ups to make it something they have to break into; as they knew a language before they were transported, it wouldn't be far fetched for it to be possible to acclimate. If you refer to the recruitment page, communication was one of the first things to be asked about. I ended up just going with it being something that just came automatically for a couple reasons. It seemed like something that would add a type of flavor to the game since the players could discuss their past at some point, as well as making npc interaction much easier overall.

----

@Players

Deciding the remaining npcs deaths is being based partially around your earlier votes, partially on the rp itself.

Two of the current [starting] npcs are evil, to a degree, and will cause your group harm [possibly significant harm] as well as good.

You have already condemned one of the pure hearted npcs to death.

Woot! Finally got my post up even though I'm really disappointed in how it turned out and I'm sorry to everyone that it took so long.

I feel bad for the NPC we've killed but just because they're pure-hearted doesn't mean they'll be useful to the pack's survival. A raptor's gotta be ruthless and if someone's just a mouth to feed then good riddance. We need to survive, not coddle others. <-- I know it's an OOC thread but Hoff pretty much wrote that.

The definition of good and evil, insofar as the NPCs go, is not constrained to their moral values. All of the npcs have something unique to bring to the table, but only the pure hearted of the group don't pose a risk to your survival later on.

I will make every decision count. >:D

A good tea must be properly brewed. This takes time.

edit: also, np bean on the late post. RP has barely been open 24 hours anyhow!

It felt much longer due to stress and writer's block and being behind pretty much everyone else. I rewrote the thing three times, one of which was completed and ready for posting before I decided I hated it and started from scratch. I want this to move fast cause it's exciting and fun. RP! RP! RP!

and couldn't a pure-hearted person be just as dangerous through their sympathy? Predators prey on sympathy. Say we meet a "rival group" of raptors and the pure-hearts bring them into the fold out of kindness but the rival raptors (rivtors? no that's awful.) steal our kill in the middle of the night or hurt us or something. Raptors, even our animal side or the animal side of others, should display at least some emotions such as sympathy. Empathy, grief, sympathy and similar emotions have been observed in Corvids and is thought to be important to the survival of a species. Since dinosaurs were the precursors of birds I don't believe it unreasonable to assume that even a fully animalistic raptor would be capable of emotions such as sympathy, even just a primitive version of it. And if these dinosaurs have those emotions then they can in theory, learn to prey on the emotions of others leaving our pure-hearts to be a liability to our group as well.

am I over thinking this?

and how do we communicate with other raptors that are not former humans? They will understand us, right? Probably have a very different world-view though.

A little, though to try to sum it up better while keeping the previously mentioned stuff in mind:

Pure - Will try to avoid causing the pack problems.

Evil - Will not try much to avoid causing problems. Will intentionally cause harm.

Also, Bean, i'd write circles around you guys if i didn't stop to revise the piss out of what I type. OF course, my material would be so full of blargh that i'd probably give someone an aneurism when they tried to process it. Hell, I revised this post alone several times. Nothing is wrong with revising and wanting your post to sound right as that is how you can get the most effect out of your words.

In slight opposition to my original post with the edited one, no you're not over thinking it too much. I want you to think and second guess yourself and dread decisions you were unsure of. The re-summarized pure/evil bit still plays a part, though.

You would understand and communicate with other raptors in the same fashion as each other. You might even understand other dinosaurs as time goes along.

Just wanted to better explain myself. I do it a lot with my posts around the forums. I'll post something then realize I should explain my opinion better or more clearly or I should've said it differently or I could have said it better or have been funnier and then I try to frantically edit my post before anyone responds or reads it >_>

Okay. That definition of Pure and Evil clicks better with me. I understand that.

Cool. This totally opens up the possibility of convincing a T-rex to let me ride him like a horse. I will be unstoppable! :evillaugh:

So we have two people who think they are high, and a few people that think this might be heaven. That should be fun explaining this to them.

As mereneth said. There should be some initial and perhaps longlasting resistence between the human emotions and the raptors instincts.

It makes perfect sense from a roleplaying standpoint, but it also makes it a little more frustrating. If people think they are high/dead, then they might make stupid decisions. Especially when being chased by a giant dinosaur.

I see your point. On the other hand, perhaps allysa's death will be a wake up call to how real this really is. Another good reason for an initial death.

Well, that goes into the debate of emotions versus instincts. I found this to be helpful: http://www.jstor.org/stable/1413480?seq=1

I think that a better way of phrasing it would be learned human culture and individual personality versus animal instinct and pack behaviour.

Thanks, but I find no pleasure in reading documents about people try to explain hard things that are hard to explain.

Yeah. I found it to be a thick read too but fascinating and fun to learn. YAY LEARNING!

This RP has already given me a lot to research. I love it.

New content post.

So, contemplating 'keeping track of days' using the thread title, though at the same time the disorientation of not doing so would possibly add an interesting affect on how you guys post later on down the road.

In other news, my 'title' has mysteriously changed to 'likes puppies' which leaves me very confused since it is obviously not the next transition in the 'chat frequency'

I can only assume this is somehow a custom title and wonder if the one who granted it to me thought my little critter in my icon was a weird puppy, and not a sentient alien species of my own creation called Draskhala. They're more like this as adults: Draskhala [Riarkraa] with a human companion

Or perhaps it is a secret transition point as a joke about 101 dalmatians that i completely missed.
