Mehr continues to mingle with the crowd while is disperses, making himself known, then gathers the rest of the team, "I assume there will be no opposition to us partaking in this business of reptile folk?"

Gwen nods with a sly smile. "What happened to not going after bandits?~

I was going to voulenteer myself even if you disagreed. The daughter has top priority, hopefully she will still be alive.""
Gaen does not get her hopes up.

"Eh, I was getting bored here anyway," Syli shrugs. "I'd like to see what the jungle has to offer for a change. And it just so happens that I think I know someone who could lend us a boat. And, well, seeing as it's the only boat anyway... Mehriv?" She motions her boss to follow her.

Working her way over to... shoot, was it Raina, or was it Raini? She could've sworn she called herself Raina, but that announcer said Raini... Eh, either way. "So, Captain, any chance you're headed upriver anytime soon? I think we're gonna be headed upriver pretty soon ourselves."

If Thaq is still here, Gwen will ask him what he thinks of all of this and what the attacks mean, and if it was possible that the Lurkhalls were behind such an attack.

If he isn't then she will ask the Morleys about what ships they are targeting and whom they belonged to. She asks in a subtle matter of how the lurkhalls knew to be there so quickly after the ship came on the river.

The party seem to generally agree that this is as good a quest for them as any right now.

Syli sidles up to Raini/Raina* and asks what her plans are for heading upriver.

"Well, well! You ARE interesting! You are correct that I'm heading upriver. We'll be leaving in two days at dawn, but I'm sad to say I can't take the Gloriana into Morley waters. We just don't have the knowledge to safely navigate the channels. I assume that you are heading upriver to tackle this kidnapping affair hmm? How were you planning to travel?

Korrik asks around about the exotic lady a little, but with no luck. At least until Malcolm Larkhall apparently overhears him and decides to explain in an unnecessarily loud voice.

"Now now, there's no need to be shy man! That lovely young lady is Xetara. One of my hunting parties found her lost in the forest, and so they rescued her and brought her back to civilisation. It was sheer luck that she wasn't killed by wild creatures or that those Savage reptiles didn't find her first, thank the gods! Niw, of course thanks to her good fortune and the generosity of the Larkhall family, she will want for nothing."

It would seem that Malcolm is fond of boasting about his family, and Korrik notices a few nearby people roll their eyes or shake their heads subtly in their direction.

Gwen finds Thaqorel heading for the exit and pulls him to one side to ask if he thinks the Larkhalls could have orchestrated this whole thing. He looks genuinely surprised at the question and pretty uncomfortable about being asked so openly in their present company.

"What? No! I mean... Look, I'm just a bridge guard. All this politicking and stuff is really not my business. I just do my job and keep my snout out of other folks affairs as best I can."

She lets him go, and instead tries her luck asking the same question of the Morleys, but Dorral is not in any state to talk about details and Valeria simply dismisses any insinuations as nonsense.

"The guard raised he alarm and the Larkhalls likely heard it first. Their property is closer to the riverfront than ours so their early arrival is hardly a mystery!"

--------------------------
*It should be Raina, but I can apparently never remember which it is, so I'm giving up! Raini can be a nickname.

Also burns: the ships / families who were attacked are listed in the 2nd meeting update. If you feel like it, you can even check the territory map to see roughly where the different attacks would have been.

"Same way we've done everything so far: With great haste and zero foresight." Syli replies dryly. "More seriously, if there's an actual plan beyond 'lets go save the hostages', I haven't been told, and my gut's tellin' me we're going to be improvising the hell outta this one..."

((Sort of waiting for Mehriv here, since he's technically the boss. Plus, he probably needs to meet with the transportation, all things considered))

"Hah! Well, if you're asking for a ride upriver I can probably take you as far as the bridge at Lover's Pass if you don't mind sleeping on deck. That's about the last place I can dock before we get to our own waterways, but they would be well out of your way.

My ship's about as fast as walking when you head upstream, but at least there's no risk of getting lost and it's safe at least. You'd owe me a pretty big favour though!"
, Raina adds with a grin.

((Figured you might like a little more info on the transport offer for when dlover gets online, so here you go. Also, in case you were concerned, it is absolutely possible to travel around and cross rivers and stuff with or without a boat.))

"Ah, yes. Everyone speaks SO highly of the generosity of the Larkhalls, I'm sure the dear woman is in MUCH better hands now than if she had been grabbed by savages. They have ZERO scruples after all, who knows now they might have taken advantage of her? Good evening, sir.", I say with a bow, having trouble keeping the sarcasm from my tongue.

Gwen gives a nod. Still highly convenient of them, when they claimed it as their ship. She goes eavesdropping to try to find out more.

An odd shade of dark red begins to flush over Malcolm Larkhall's face as he realises he is being made fun of and he replies:

"Watch yourself, Master Halfling. You do not know nearly as much as you think you do." Malcolm turns back to the woman, with a smile that is now uncomfortably forced.

Gwen wanders around the room, but it seems that nobody is discussing anything suspicious or criminal tonight, and the only discussion about the Larkhalls seems to be in admiration or disapproval of Mehriv's boldness (or insolence) in refusing to hand over the Iskat to them.

She also sees Malcolm Larkhall speaking to Korrik then turning away looking offended. The younger Larkhall, Calum, looks visibly angry, but his father places a hand on his arm and leads him away instead.

"...This shall not stand, father!"
"And yet it must. Let us go. I think I have heard enough for tonight and the fresh air will do me some good."

I return to the group, whispering to Mehr, "Pretty sure the Larkhalls hate me now... whenever we're done here, we have an applicant interview to conduct back at the inn."

Being surrounded by all these rich folk I'm not allowed or currently able to rob has me on edge, I just stand near my fellows until they are ready to leave.

Gwen puts on her best attempt at being charming (which is pretty damn charming), but it's not enough. The Larkhalls stop with obvious annoyance, but both men make a visible effort to contain their anger and pause on their way out.

"No, miss. I can think of nothing else that I would wish you or your companions can do for us today."
"Good evening, miss. Have a pleasant evening."

Whatever else they may be, they certainly seem well-versed in the etiquette of polite society.

Gwen gives a sigh and goes back to Merh and gives him a curtsy, trying to mkae herself look more regal to the others. "Sir, the Lurkhalls seem to be displeased about some matter. The son looked like he was about to do something out of anger. I worry our future relations with the Lurkhalls."

((Ok, well, this woman doesn't look like that :P I can make up a description if you like, but her exotic / foreignness comes from both her physical appearance (unusually tall; long, dark hair; pale skin) and the unusual style of her clothing.))

Raina grins broadly at Mehriv and offers her hand.

"Then we have a deal. Take tomorrow to prepare yourselves and then come to the ship. You may sleep on board tomorrow if you prefer, but I departing at dawn the following day, whether you are there or now. We can discuss how you will repay my benevolent generosity as we travel!", she says with a wink.

"Now, if you'll excuse me, I am tired of wearing uncomfortable clothes. Good night sir; Syli. I look forward to your company!"

------------------------------------------------

With the meeting apparently finished, the party head out into the lamplit streets and begin the long walk back to their Inn...

I assume you guys are happy enough to walk home? Or would you prefer to stick to the lamp-lit streets and take the ferry (assuming you can afford the 3 GP it would cost for all of you?)

As we walk back (I'm not splurging for the ferry), I brief Mehr on the halfling bookkeeper, Otho Greenbottle that I'd met.

"He seems a decent sort, a bit down on his luck due to lack of official training and poor planning,
but he seems motivated to find a job that will let him stay in town. We don't have inventory just yet, but once the shop is up and running, having an employee who can stay and watch over things would mean we don't have to shutter the door when we take jobs that lead us out of town. He'll be waiting for us at the inn, I promised him only an interview... and perhaps a place to stay until his boat comes in if he doesn't suit our needs."

You all leave the meeting at around 8.30 pm and begin the long walk back through the streets. The temple district is lit up with strings of paper lanterns and people are out in the streets, eating, drinking, selling trinkets and the like and generally having a nice time (it's less bustling than a street market, but it certainly seems to be a time to be out and about and socialising). The air is sticky and humid, but the burning heat of the day is long passed and the air is rich with the smells of fragrant drinks and rich foods.

Korrik explains Otho Greenbottle to Mehriv as they walk towards the river.

When you reach the ferry, you can see and hear a far rowdier crowd enjoying the night across the water. The path along the riverside is lit for a few hundred metres, but quickly disappears into the darkness. Luckily for you all, there is a bright moon in the sky tonight which should be enough to see by.
