Re: Hunters of Letrua OOC

Post by Dlover » Sat May 06, 2017 3:01 am

Holy shit, so I spend all week working my ass off, finally think "Oh, I should announce that I'm busy," and then 12 hours after the announcement I've finished all my urgent assignments so the next is two weeks off. So either I'm not nearly as bad at math as I think I am, or these two assignments are going to be trash for marks. >.> Whatever, it's been 12 hours of constant work, yesterday was 15, all while coughing my lungs up, and at this point I just don't want to do any more. So hey, update time.
My game:
Hunters of Letrua; Character list
Also Player / Monster stats, skill lists.

My characters:
Tugs Tails, the goblin that was sort of a trapper and wears a bear's tail at his neck, for some reason - Lair of the Mountain King (Run by Thinks)
Alex Sparo, A city boy, poor of sight, who has learned to manipulate people and make the most of what he, and others, have - Trinity Isles (Run by Mort)
Mehriv Turajin, a Noble Dragonborn Sorcerer sent from his clan because he wasn't dragony enough. - The Wandering Archipelago (Run by Thinks)

It's not so much two weeks of as two weeks of classes with slightly less stress. I'll still have to work on that next assignment, sadly. :'( :P

I have four assignments due in the next two weeks, soo... Yeah, screw it, I'll update. I've recently cut that down from six, and it's not like I have no free time.

Just made a little thing in the google sheet for Hunters which takes the total SP a character has in a skill and outputs the level of their skill, how much SP past the level they've earned, and how much they need to earn for the next level. Which is mostly for my benefit, but it's there if anyone wants it. As always, all these numbers and things are available through a link in my signature.

Thanks for sharing that with us. One question, though, if I may: How come Julius has MORE SP in enchantment (47; and 60 total), than most other character in TOTAL (Korga 35 total, Loki 53 total, Olly 30 total, Risu 40 total)?

I thought enchantment was supposed to be harder to skill up (or is that only via the more SP per level requirement) than every other talent.
Aside from that, I think you had a mechanic of people needing a "break" from enchanting, because the magic poisoned the human body (Link to a post where Julius got sickness from enchanting). Whereas Julius has practically been doing it non-stop. Did you do away with that mechanic?

Sorry if I seem nit-picky, I just would like to understand the mechanics better. :)

I've talked to him about sp gained from enchanting, and having a max sp per session/post/ect. Because I agree it is a bit much. I think it worked previously like that because of how much sp it took to level but now with lower sp needed for levels I do think it needs to be worked on. ...Honestly I am more or less happy just making items for now so I don't mind if we alter the exp gain/exp needed for enchanting again.

I have no idea if he is still using the exhaustion/sickness thing but Julius hasn't enchanted for the past while (since last night) and shouldn't get any sp for making a mobile ball of light (if he could).

Well, as I understood it, Julius had been enchanting those new explody-balls all night long, not even sleeping. But I admit I only skim the part of the update concerning you guys. no offence. :)

I'll have to adjust the SP gains, yes. I've just finished my last assignment for the semester, though I've got a couple of exams still, so I can work on it a bit more, but it'll take a while to get it right. I may just have to limit the gains based on time, since even getting just 1SP for an enchantment as detailed as it can be is still a lot, it seems...

As for the sickness, it's more of a short-term result. If an Enchanter works on a Temporary Enchantment for 6+2*(level) turns in a row they become sick, then it's that many turns +2 without enchanting to recover. Creating permanent enchantments is less sickening since the majority of the Magic goes through the object, and in that night with the shatterball he made one ball in the duration of his shift keeping watch.

Also, Loki's not getting SP from that. But if he spent enough time for it to be considered a Training Session (About 1/3rd of a day) he may get some Toughness or Dexterity. :P

Same here! Too busy for that.

If anyone wants an update on Squirrel, she can communicate with beasts and has befriended 2 aeran (giant eagle things) who now live at the gladiator compound and fight with her. (which is good because she'd really suck by herself.) She's also just picked up a repkull hatchling.

Okay, so considering Enchantment SP... In the past SP has been granted per enchantment based on the difficulty and detail involved. Do we want to scrap that and say that the Enchanter will have to spend a session practicing, as with other skills, and only get bonus SP for particularly notable events, as other skills do? It doesn't make sense that a person can be creative and make crazy things and learn nothing from it, but for balancing... Maybe it's necessary. What do you think?

So... depending on whether you define 1 day = 24 hours or 1 day + 1 night = 24 hours a third of a day would be 4-8 hours, approximately? Do they have Viagra in this world? o:)

But all jokes aside, it's your game, so it should be your decision. If you want to reward creativity and such, you should do so. I just got confused because you said that enchantment should be harder to level up than all the other skills. Yet, as it is, it is clearly the other way around, with the enchantment being able to gain SP/level much higher in the same amount of time.

I just wish there were ways to be "creative" with other skills, too, to level them up faster as well, if nothing else for balance. I was kind of hoping it would work that way when I opted to play out the sparring fight with e.g. Mac, I think, via PM? But I don't think I got anything for the extra effort, which, to be fair, kind of left me unmotivated to do that again.

If you let people do anything with enchantment (which is very OP in itself, but magic can and maybe should be OP), and have them gain SP faster in that skill (even if it takes more SP to gain levels), then why should anyone bother with any other talents? At least that's my train of thought. I'm not attempting to criticise you or tell you how your game should be done, mind you. I'm merely providing my PoV, after you asked for feedback.

Re: Hunters of Letrua OOC

Yeah, you've definitely got a point. I'd wanted enchantment to be powerful, but hard to master, but it's balanced badly. So, in the future... Normal skills gain 3-4SP from a training session, so maybe Enchantment will gain 1-2 per session, and for both cases notable creativity or roleplay can earn bonus SP. If that occurs during a training session, the bonus can be up to the value gained from the session, and outside it's just 1SP, so it's less gains but less time. How's that sound? Then Enchantment could be dropped back to the same SP requirements, but would take twice as long. There'd still be the matter of Burns having so much more SP, though. To be frank, I don't like the idea of taking away SP, for two reasons. First, I don't really know how much I should reduce it. The second reason is that it feels like a punishment for my improper balancing. The other method to even things out would be to stop Julius from getting much SP until things are balanced, but I get the feeling that would be taking away encouragement to actually do things... Being a GM is hard. :gonk:

You're also right about the sparring match with Mac. If I remember correctly, you were particularly detailed with that. Enough so that you should have received a couple of SP for strength. I don't remember if you did, though. Want me to add them in?

Why not just keep giving Julius SP as usual but call it MP and separate it from the physical skills completely. That way you can have two totally separate economies and don't have to balance them. MP might come in faster, but doing useful (big) things costs much more.

Wow, Julius is fearing for his life, huh. Well, makes sense since it's a giant that can accidentally smoosh people.

As for the MP... I suppose that would be imposing a limit on how much enchanting can actually be done, which may work too. I'll have to consider how to moderate it. Maximum, recovery, cost, they'll be important. I'll look into it.

I would prefer it, if you were not to take anything away from burns. I would like to think I'm not that petty.
I'm not sure how I feel about "punishing" him for the progression in the past by slowing him down now. It kinda rubs me the wrong way, but if -as he said himself - he is okay with that... *shrugs*

I just would like to have characters (all of them) that are all more or less on the same level, instead of having everyone "suck" compared to a single "uber-char". And I know it is hard to achieve. So thank you for trying.

I'm not even sure what Loki was trying to learn in that sparring match with Mac. But I distinctly remember asking you if I would get (or did get) more SP for playing the match out, and you telling me that's not the case (which is why I stopped doing that), so I can only assume I didn't get anything extra back then.
Personally, on an emotional level - wanting Loki to be the best he can be - I would not turn down the offer, but then again, I'm already the one with the character with the most SP (apart from burns) plus this might become even more the case with Loki being the second one to learn enchantment now, so I'm not sure if it would be fair towards the others to retro-actively change it to my advantage.
Basically, if you're going to let Julius "stay as he is" with all the earned SP (and as I mentioned earlier, I think you should), you probably should do the same with Loki and not grant him bonuses from the past all of a sudden. Complicated, hard decision all together.

I almost feel like Risu is OP with her aeran to be honest, but I don't give her much chance in a fight without them, even with her 'thought distraction' of opponents, so maybe its fair. She's clearly the weakest combat wise by herself.
