Lands of Gordor 2.

Post by Jacon » Sun Oct 26, 2014 6:23 pm

You start off in the port of Grenstar, the newly created imperial outpost in Gordor. The small village is full of bustle as colonist build new wooden buildings and start planting crops for the next year. Imperial guards keep a wary eye especially those on the tall wooden walls that protect the village from the dangers of the wild jungles. Outside those wall lay the wilderness of Gordor where massive creatures roam and savage natives. Only the bravest of scouts dare to deep into the forest where the unknown waits for them with bared teeth.

Just outside the walls is where the galleys are. As of now only one body swings from the deck where he executed a few days ago. Their is waft of rotting meat in this place. ├äkk ├£rgeshkÔÇÖ stares at the corpse, after traveling all this way it seems his journey was finally at an end.
It took him only a moment to notice a small group of guards approaching him from the towns gate. They wait a respectful distance from waiting for you to approach when you are ready. You have no idea why they are here.

Nightfeather sits alone at the " Tankard on a tree stump" inn. Despite his obvious usefulness to the scouts they still treat him warily. Imperials are not known for being incredibly friendly to outsiders. Even to those who help them. Sitting before him is a letter of summons to meet the governor of this outpost in one hours time. Usually he'd expect another misson of checking on the lumberjacks camp up north but he does't usually have to see the governor for that.

Etta finds herself being escorted to the governors house after answering a call for a guide for the jungle. Their are two burly guards escorting her and a captain who goes by the name Alexander Rylinnlona. She feels very out of place as she is the only native to be seen in this outpost. She can't help but notice the wary stares of those around her. Alexander seems right at home. He to has been summoned to meet the governor alongside this "tribal." He wonders if he is trouble but cannot recall anything worthy of the governors attention.

Nightfeather will ask around the bar to see about any recent events or news (anything that might explain his summons).
Gather Information: d20+3 (possible penalty for short time period)

He will then answer the summons.

Etta, unfazed by the stares from the outpost's residents, follows the guards silently.

She gazes impassively back at the few people who meet her eye; she returns their wary glances with a coolly confident, inscrutable smile - her expression is not particularly one of friendliness, more of faint amusement.

~How strange it feels to be so directly observed. I've been the centre of attention many times, but not like this... I feel more like an exhibit than anything else. Still, it'll be over soon.~ she thinks to herself as she walks.

What the hell? I haven't even been here long enough to do anything.

Akk watches the guards, waiting for them to make the first move.

Nightfeathers wonders around the bar and finds a small group of fellow scouts. A large joyful ( and drunk) half orc by the name of Travis, A gloomy halfling by the name of Lilth and a very ugly goblin. You chat them up and after a little bit Lilth told you he heard down the grapevine that a Shining lance might make a appearance at Gordor so he can report back to the emperor. The governor is quite besides himself worried that the emperor might pull what little resources they give them now from his colony as he has nothing to show but this ruddy little town.
Travis mentions that his half brother, A large and strong orc, and his kin also got the letter of summons two days ago and soon afterwards headed into the jungle. He hasn't seen them since.

Night feather than leaves heading out towards the governors building.

Akk glares at the guards and waits for them to make the first move. Finally one of the guards slowly makes his way towards you. He seems grumpy some reason and shoves a letter into your chest.
" Your to report to the governors building in an hour. Don't be late orc and don't make us look for you again."

Etta cooly watches the village as they approach the governors building. It's more of a watchtower than a house but you can smell a strange and delicious aroma coming from it. Alexander knows the smell as ham, an exotic food out here in Gordor. Two large man in full armor, knights of the watch, are keeping guard at the door. The step aside allowing you entrance.
" Don't act up tribal, I'll have no regrets putting you in the ground." Sneers one of the guards.

Nightfeather will thank the others for their company. He'll also ask Travis about his half-brother and says he'll keep an eye out for him if he heads the same way. He'll then depart and answer the summons.

Akk will glare back at the guard before removing the paper from his chest and looking it over."Fine, but only because I was heading in that direction anyway," he growls, not bothering to wait for the guard to respond before walking off towards town.

"I'm sure you'd live just long enough to develop one or two regrets if you made that choice, my friend. But as you can see, I am here to work and nothing more. You'll have no trouble from me." Etta steps past him, another faint smile crossing her lips but not quite reaching her eyes.

Tribal! Yes, and proudly, but he said it like an insult, like he wasn't an immigrant to her home. Still, the thought that he'd be considering her words when she was inside with his boss cheered her slightly, if only in a petty way. Put her in the ground indeed. As if.

Alexander turns his head back at the last comment. "I don't think you would like the result of going through with that promise, Ma'm." He then shifts his gaze to the original man. "Corporal Yetts, If try to pick anymore fights, I will send you off to test yourself against the 8th's unarmed combat champion, so you know what a real fight is like."

"I made no promise, Captain. It's just I don't see a queue of willing guides here today, and if I'm suddenly no longer able to scout, the Governor might well look to the source of my unavailability when placing blame..." Etta shrugs in a noncommittal sort of way, that previous hint of a smile gone and replaced with piously pursed lips, a look of genuine concern on her face.

Alexander says "Are you sure your not a local politician as well as a guide? But you need not worry what the governor may or may not think. I know the Master Sargent of the garrison and he's not keen on little tin pot emperors in his outfit."
He looks back over his shoulder, "Lesson one for working for the Imperial Army, always get on the good side of the Sargent. A corporal can hide from a governor because he's too insignificant to notice at such lofty heights. He'll never be able to hide from his Sargent. Lesson two, Only the brilliant or the bark raving mad violate the spirit of their orders...the corporal here forgot that one obviously."

"I don't think you would like the result of going through with that promise, Ma'm." Alexander says to Etta before turning his gaze on the soldier.
"Corporal Yetts, If try to pick anymore fights, I will send you off to test yourself against the 8th's unarmed combat champion, so you know what a real fight is like."
The man freezes and lowers his hand almost shamefacedly. He resumes a stiff but military stance and giving a quick head nod to the captain.
" Sorry, sir. Won't happen again." He says but when Alexander is turned Etta can't help but notice the furious glower coming from Yetts.

Akk grabs the paper and growls at the guard who gives him a grim smile before backing off. Akk marches back into the city towards the governors building. He can't help but notice the guards following him at decent distance.

Nightfeather asks about Travis's half brother. Travis tells him his name was Krian and he was a good warrior with five jungle trips under his belt. He does have a very bad rose problem and has a short temper though. His fellows warriors were very similar to him as well which makes Travis very worried about him. A small force of orc warriors is a lethal group and it would be very hard to prevent them from reporting back.

Everyone meets at the Governors building and are quickly ushered into the study by a dainty half elf lass. Sitting behind the desk is a large muscular man with a buzz cut and official looking suit. A greatsword is sheathed on his back as he looks up from a map he was studying a moment before.
" Please come in, would you like some dwarven brandy." He says waving a hand at a small bottle with glasses nearby. " Allow me to introduce myself. I am governor Liemsworth. You may call me Liem. Refresh my memory and remind who you are and introduce yourself to the others."

If people want to choose colors for themselves that might help make the paragraphs a little easier to read.
In that case I'll be color=#800000

Nightfeather will wait for the Captain (I assume he outranks me?) to make the first move. He won't take any of the offered drink unless the Captain does too. He'll wait for the captain to speak before answering "I'm Nightfeather. I'm one of your scouts sir.

ooc: While my character doesn't feel the need to state that fact he is a Raptorian, it should be obvious to everyone. I'm presuming we'd recognize each other's races. I know tea is playing a half-orc and based on his status I'm assuming Quarg is playing a human but I have no clue about Nikohl, just that she's a tribal.

When the conversation naturally moves to her, making it clear it's her turn for an introduction, Etta speaks up. "My name is... not the easiest to pronounce, but most people call me Etta. I've answered your call for a guide to the jungle."

(Chuck: Etta's human, she is of the Heavy Hand tribe. Appearance wise she looks kind of Polynesian.)

OOC; Actually soft of half-elf...just really a human with pointy ears for the Captain...
And I guess I will take color=#00BF00 if no one minds...

IC: Alexander removed the black hat with the black feather plume and puts it under his arm as they walk in. Now the traces of his elven ancestry show through in his pointy ears. As the Governor attempts to put the group at ease, the Captain trys to figure out why there are now three locals in the office with him. "Ah yes sir, very good of you Thank You", when offered the dwarven brandy, he could toss dwarven wine back into whatever horse it rode in on, but when they distilled it into brandy it was quite good.

Alexander watches over his sniffer glass of brandy to see who partakes of the offer of hospitality, and who can deal with the oddly shaped glasses for the drink. He'd been some places where local customs were bizarre to say the least. Alexander begins introducing himself when prompted by the Governor,

"Captain Alexander Rylinnl'ona of the 12th Kestna Volunteer Rangers..." He pauses on that and moves his hat over to a small side table. "Formerly of the 12th Kestna as of this morning actually..."

((I'll play with colors later, so for now, a nice droll black))

Akk will help himself to the brandy (what? he'd offered. Free liquor.) and then take up a position against one of the walls where he can get a good view of his not-quite-yet companions. "Ürgeshk, Äkk," he offers quietly, but doesn't feel particularly inclined to answer any of the governor's other questions.

Alexander, Nightfeather and Akk will help themselves to the brandy. It's very strong and your reminded how rare it is to encounter a good bottle of liquor out here in the jungles. This must have been exported from very far away to get here. Liem helps himself to a glass as well. Theirs a moment of silence as everyone enjoys the drink.
Finally Alexander speaks up.

"Captain Alexander Rylinnl'ona of the 12th Kestna Volunteer Rangers...Formerly of the 12th Kestna as of this morning actually..."
" Oh yes captain, They tell me you've been surprisingly good at being a Reeve. Since you've taken the job theirs has a increase in friendly contact with several smaller tribes in the area. You were a natural pick for this mission."

Nightfeather. I'm one of your scouts sir.
" Ah yes, I know it had something to do with feathers. Your quite the asset for the scouts. I must thank you for your help in increasing our geographic knowledge of the area. I know flying in these jungles can dangerous with all the giant hawks nesting nearby."

"My name is... not the easiest to pronounce, but most people call me Etta. I've answered your call for a guide to the jungle."
" Oh? Truth be told I wasn't really expecting a tribal to take us up on the offer. So many still treat us as unwelcomed guests. What tribe are you from Etta, You don't look like any of the nearby tribesmen i've met."

"Ürgeshk, Äkk,"
" Ah Ugeshk, Your properly wondering why I called you here. I noted on the manifesto of the ship that brought you here that you were on a spiritual journey. Only priests can make that claim to get free boarding on our ships. I was hoping you might add your holy guidance to the mission I am entrusting to these fine soldiers and tribesmen. You would be well rewarded and properly better off than if you refused. I suppose you worship one of those.....Orc gods?"
► Show Spoiler
After everyone has their say Liem takes a seat and nods at the group to do the same.
" I'm sure some of you have heard, A shining lance is coming. Don't know when, don't know why. Chances are he's here to evaluate my success here on Gordor. Sadly they won't much like what i've done. Building a successful town is one thing but they want treasure, magic, a general knowledge of the area. I can't do much about this with the resources am supplied. Am lucky to even have one legion with me and thats not enough to expend outwards from here. If I can give a good report and they give me more resources, soldiers, perhaps a few mages, I can start do some real good here, not just for us but for the natives here."
Liem pulls out a small map thats barely filled out. You can see their is a general outline of Gordor but nothing inside is filled out but a small part where Grentown is.
" We don't know much past our walls but the things we do see are amazing. A native one traded a 4 pound gold ore for some steel swords. Some of the furs we gathered are the best we've ever seen. Some even have magical properties. My mage also tells me that the natives use an ancient magic. He calls druidic power, I don't quite understand myself but apparently it can equal even a archmage. If we can harness that kind of power that would surely impress the Lance."
He pushes the map to Alexander
" I want you boys to go out there. Get a good idea of the lay of the land. Find out how hostile the tribes are and see if you can change their minds...Or eliminate them if you can. Find me gold, gems, magic. Anything that will impress the Lance. Tell me what kind of monsters are out there, what kind of magic the natives use. In general come back with something to give the Lance, show him that Gordor is worth the empires time and money."

"Forgive my bluntness, Governor, but the reason the people of Gordor see you as uninvited guests is that you are. But we are sharing this land now, regardless of the opinions of the natives here, and I would like to believe you when you say that your intent is to improve life for everyone, not just your own people. I share that same goal, and that's why I answered your call. Unity, or at least not open fighting, is the only way forward I see.

As for your question, I am from the Heavy Hands. We are more open to outsiders than many of the other tribes, but somewhat fewer in number - I suppose the Captain here was right when he called me a politician, as that's often the role we Heavies play here. I rather hope my presence will help with the hostility problem you're anticipating, actually."

Nightfeather's interest greatly increases when he hears about this ancient form of magic. After the Governor is finished speaking he asks, "Would you mind if I talked with your mage about this druidic form of magic? I'd be interested to learn more about it before heading out."

Akk will take a moment to think this over, or, given the number of disparate thoughts going through his head, he may need several moments. Yeah,...right. You practically kidnap me and then you expect me to turn around and just merrily help you along like I got any camaraderie with you at all? What in the names of all the great gods gives you the idea that someone like me would even want to help you? I know you're human, but are you completely daft? Hm, oh well, it's your own fault for asking. Then again, if I don't do something idiotic and get myself killed, this could go to my advantage. I don't trust these people, but then, I don't have to trust them. Perhaps if I keep a close eye on my back... and he does have good taste in brandy.

Finally he answers, "What kind of reward?"
He will also make a mental note to try this spiritual mission thing later to see if he can get free drinks.

((Okay, now the half-orc is just getting dangerous ideas...
Also, if #BF4000 is too close to ChuckDaRighteous's brown, I'll shift to something more orange.))

" I strongly suggest you do. He has a library of old reports and info from the first excursion the empire made here fifty years ago. Not only will you be able to learn more about this "druidric" magic but also gleam the where abouts of old forts and local tribes. Perhaps you can gleam something of value from those old papers. He's house is next to mine. Just tell him I sent you and he'll give you entry."

" Believe me, the conditions you natives live in are horrendous in comparison to civilized living. Even our lowliest peasant lives a safer and more productive life than what i've seen here. Under imperial rule you will find everything much improved.
Your a Heavy Hand. I've heard of your people, traders that live far to east of here on the other island. Strange to see one out here but none the less a small blessing. I understand you people are quite respected for honest dealings. I believe if we have managed to expend towards the other island we will find allies with the Heavy Hands. No doubt having you as a guide will be helpful to the cause."

"What kind of reward?"
" Well, I could pay you in coin but that doesn't go far here in Gordor. Only Grenstar accepts imperial coins. If you bring me back something good I could see about enchanting your weapons or better equipping you for the jungle. Perhaps if you do good enough job I can flag down a ship to take you back to your native home. You won't find many ships willing to make the voyage to the orc islands but I have the power to charter one if need be. Truthfully i'm willing to bargain for whatever you need within reason of course."

" I will make sure you have some decent equipment for the journey. Paper and ink for mapping, Some potions in case you get hurt. Some scrolls so you can send messages to us if you can cast the spell. Must of you know how dangerous the jungle is. I've lost entire squads to that forest. I would suggest choosing your battles carefully, Not everything out there can be killed easily. If you befriend a tribe listen to them, they have better knowledge of whats out than we do."

Alexander had not said much, but then he was trying to get a read off of the others. And was wanting to jump across that desk and strangle this Liam about as fast as possible.
This sounded like some god awful colonial mess that he had spent a great deal of this blood, sweat, and tears cleaning up. What had that poor Lieutenant's name been, the one who got slaughtered that caused the Norbian Punitive Expedition?

Alexander knew damn well that the Govoner would be well suited by three scouts and a Ranger Captain from the Old Empire being blotted off the face of the earth. Oh, the stories it woud cause back in the Empire and he'd get the backing and resources he so desired. Yeah, Alexander had a place in this little show allright. Staked to the ground and going....what sound do goats make"

The Captain turns his attention to the last item of the missing squad of orcs. Either they met something nasty or met something appealing to an Orc, neither sounded all that inviting to him.
Really...why are you reading this?

"Speaking of lost squads, I've heard a rumor of a squad of orcs that hasn't reported back yet. Are there any friendly squads in the area we should keep our eyes open for?"
" Lost squad? Ah you must mean the orcs I sent with Master Zeffur. I sent them out two days ago with the same mission as am giving you. They haven't reported back yet but thats fairly typical of Zeffur. Am lead to believe by his father that he hates taking the time to use scrolls. Prefers his innate powers to anything on paper. Am sure their quite all right. Those orcs and Zeffur are not to taken lightly. He's traveled through the jungle before, hasn't died yet.

As for friendly squads I sent four squads, not including yourselves, into the the jungle to bring me this report. Some of my best men are in those squads and my finest captains are leading them. Master Zeffur, Lord Blithorn, Captain Brock and Captain Zaphyr. I expect your full corporation with these man and the same for them. You all have the same goal.

Their is a fifth man you should be aware of. Some Fur hunter by the name of Leran. Brings in large kills sometimes. Very impressive. He's imperial so it's expected he'll help if you need it. Just be aware the man is a lone wolf and sometimes doesn't play well with others."
