How to salvage the old forum (moved)

Post by thinkslogically » Wed Mar 06, 2013 6:41 am

I know I've posted this already in another thread, but this is working and might just salvage some of the hard work we put into this thing before the BF Apocalypse.

If enough of us start doing this we should be able to get a good amount of data back from the old forum; in half an hour I've recovered about half of my Island game, and maybe half of LotMK as well and I'm still going. We might not save everything, but we should get at least some of the translations etc. back as well as some of the key threads. I guess we lose the Hidden subforum, but that was always the point.

How Google cache might just save us:

1. Google search for: "Thread Title" "goblins forum" and then click on 'show more results' at the bottom of the page if applicable.
2. For each result, click on the double grey arrow to the right and click on the 'cache' link.
3. Save the page! (Somewhere safe this time!)

The more specific you can be the better, but if you can remember the thread title it should work. Just don't forget to use the inverted commas.

Good luck!

More web caches to try (thanks to Krulle for these):

Other resurrection-pages known to me: (Example link is always to page 9 of the Goblins-Transcription thread:
CoralCDN: http://forums.goblinscomic.com.nyud.net ... &start=200
Google: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/s ... tart%3D200
Yahoo: http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=http%3 ... tart%3D200
The Internet Archive: http://wayback.archive.org/web/*/http:/ ... &start=200
Bing: http://www.bing.com/search?q=url:http%3 ... tart%3D200
WebCite:http://webcitation.org/query.php?url=ht ... tart%3D200
Gigablast: http://www.gigablast.com/search?k3n=473 ... tart%3D200

Note: Bing and Yahoo only show a search site with a "cached" link below the results.
None of the above services did cache the desired page 9 of the transcriptions thread (forums as a general rule have a low archive priority)
But these might help you finding more of what you want to preserve. Good luck!

Who's salvaging what:

Thinkslogically:
Lair of the Mountain King (done: 95% recovered, only missing about 6-10 turns)
The Island (Done: Turns 0-3 & 7-11 recovered. 4-6 & 12 lost.)
Escape! (done: All updates to Turn 100 are safe, but 101+ are lost.)
Make your Own Dungeon Kit (Done - nothing in google cache, looks like it's all lost).

Odd
New Dawn of Worlds (Done: recovered all except turn 6)
The Pendants
The Forsaken
TWSK (Rounds: ????)

M0rt / Burns
Threads of Reality

Dusk9
Capture the Flag (recovered page 1)

lingrem
The Abandoned (Done: pages 1,2,5,6 recovered from total of 7)

Arles
Fugitives (done?)

Alecat
Attempting to fix the old forum's backup file

Krulle
Translations Forum (saved pages 1, 2 & 4 of 9, but incomplete)

Still to do:
Pit of Danger
Pit of Death
Pit of Despair
Curse of the Gold
The Awesomesword Wanes
Destiny of the Stonetear Clan
...Others??

The forum pages are divided into sets of 25 posts.
For example, if you look for "http://forums.goblinscomic.com/viewtopi ... 5&start=650" in google, and then enter the cached version of it, you'll find page 27 of the Fugitives games.

If you would like to go to page 28 of the thread, you should type "http://forums.goblinscomic.com/viewtopi ... 5&start=675" in the search engine.

Hope it helps.

Here's what I managed to save:

As you can see, somehow, someway, nearly 90% of the game has been saved (since turns 01-77 are available back at the Keenspot forum).

So, it can be done. At least partially.
I wish the rest of you guys who put hours and hours of your time in the old forum the best of lucks saving the lost content.

Pretty useless, this doesn't include any content whatsoever except the basic premises of the game.

Unfortunately, the google cache doesn't seem to have the relevant section. Fortunately, I have a copy on my hard drive -- but it's about 4 months out of date.

I should be able to recreate the thread once the new forum goes live, but I'm in a busy period so it might take some time.

EvilCoatrack wrote:I just grabbed Turns 260-283 of DotSC with a few turns missing. Given that there are about 170 more updates to try to retrieve (the thread was at over 100 pages when the forums went down, and the first 90 updates are still on the old keenspot forums), I don't know if I'll continue my efforts.

Other people are free to try grabbing some if you feel like it, but I will be doing a recap of the game as part of the ending anyway (using the picture files I have saved for each turn).

Who's salvaging what:
Add me for the Transcriptions Thread. Although google only has pages 1,2, and 4, of the nine pages, and google did not cahce a complete page (size-limit per page)
I will do it all anyway, but I was hoping for at least one backup to come through. :(
